Presque Isle, Michigan

What is the secret that could shipwreck both of their lives?

All Emma Chambers ever wanted was a home, but when her steamboat sinks just outside Presque Isle, she's left destitute and with no place to stay.

An unlikely solution arises when the lighthouse keeper arrives in town. He's just lost his wife and is having a difficult time caring for his child. So a traveling preacher gets the idea that the keeper and Emma might be the answer to each other's dilemma. After a hasty marriage, she finds herself heading to the lighthouse with this handsome but quiet stranger. Nothing in her aimless life, though, has prepared her for parenting a rambunctious toddler, as well as managing a household.

Emma soon suspects Patrick may be hiding something from her, and then she hears a disturbing rumor about the circumstances surrounding his late wife's death. It seems as if her wish for a home and family of her own could end up leading her once more into turbulent waters.

Great story difficult narration

I felt the story was excellent however it took me a while to get past the narration. I felt the narrator's voice was very staccato and almost sounded more like a computer or robot. Love Jody Hedlund books but this narrator I felt did not do the story justice.

History-based, Sweet Love Story

If you could sum up Love Unexpected in three words, what would they be?

Faith, Hope, Love

What did you like best about this story?

Patrick's faith and integrity. Learning a bit about the history of the great lakes' lighthouses. It's a part of the country I'm not very familiar with.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Narrator tends to make female characters sound either insipid or like a wicked witch.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Patrick's honesty in returning after finding his son.

Any additional comments?

Couldn't understand why Emma continued to believe the gossipy old woman when she had been a target of the gossip's lies herself. Wanted to see Emma develop and grow as a character--she stayed pretty static. Emma's continued willingness to believe the worst in spite of so much evidence to the contrary was a bit annoying.

Good story

The story is very good and keeps your interest. At first I wasn’t sure I could listen to the narrator thru the whole book because her tone was sort of flat and robotic. But a few chapters in, it got better. I’m glad I finished because I really liked how the author developed the characters and the story.

an absolutely wonderful christian book

wow!! what can I say. I had to call couple friends to tell about this book. I don't often do reviews, but this book grabbed my attention from the very beginning. so many times a book is "ok" but I have discovered a new christian author that I will be ordering more of. I can't recommend this book highly enough. it was worth every penny I paid for it.

I am definitely going to be listening to the whole series. I love how Patrick realizes the Lord's always constant, ever present, all encompassing free forgiveness.

Too Many Questions

An okay read. I like Jody Hedlund’s sassy characters but this one is too whiny and questions everything over and over. The narrator didn’t help. The 2 year old’s vocabulary was off, but the plot was a good one!

Feel Good Book

I always read Christian fiction when I need a break from the hardcore books I usually read .. and this hit the spot for me So the story is about Emma who is an immigrant and arrives to a new town with her brother Ryan, but she doesn't have a place to live .. so she agrees to marry Patrick who is a widower with a son so she takes care of the kid but she will have a home .. the more Emma and Patrick stay together the more they grow fond of each other I like the connection about the wooden cross and how it is passed down to the main character of the next story to bring them hope .. moving on to the next book The narrator was the worst part of the book .. she is so robotic and sometimes really annoying .. I hope that doesn't continue with the rest of the series

Week Characters

I just couldn’t finish this book, stopped about 3/4 through. Both characters were too unsure of themselves and timid, it got really frustrating after awhile. The inner dialog they each had just became repetitive. Also about 90% of there problems would have been solved if they just had a conversation like a adults.
