Publisher's Summary

For years, Christians have argued, debated, and fought one another while "speaking the truth in love", yet we are no closer to the grace-filled life Jesus modeled. Biblical scholar and popular podcast host of The Bible for Normal People, Jared Byas casts a new vision for the Christian life that's built not on certainty but on the risk of love.

A biblically based Christian life is not grounded in having all the answers but in a living relationship. This ultimately shifts our focus from collecting the "right" answers to loving others deeply and authentically. With stories and insights drawn from his years as a pastor, professor, and podcast host, Jared Byas calls us back to the heart of the Bible: that truth is only true when it's lived out in love.

In a refreshing voice that's both witty and profoundly revelatory, Jared unpacks the concept of truth, its meaning, and why we so often fight over it. He makes a compelling case for how what we believe is less important than how we believe it and that, more than anything else, telling the truth in love is about following Jesus.

For anyone who has ever felt forced to choose between truth and love, acceptance and rightness, this book offers a path forward beyond truth wars and legalistic religion to a love that matters more.

Essential reading

Beautiful, insightful and extremely bold as the book progresses. This should be essential reading for every Christian, if not simply for everyone. I will purchase the book as well so I can go through it with others.

Much Needed todat

In a time where unprecedented division is being exposed in our country on both church and politics, Jared has put together a thoughtful and compassionate way of seeing people as something to be loved and not “won over” to our opinions. He uses scripture a lot and gives a fresh perspective on its meaning within our culture. This book is for everyone, but not everyone will receive it because, unfortunately, there are still a lot of us who need to hold on to the illusion of truth that’s something that needs to be “upheld”. Highly recommended.

Great takeaway

Not everything aligned with 'my' beliefs of Jesus but for someone who allowed rules and expectations to weigh me down, this book shifted my focus to the beauty of loving others and not on me and where I am falling short.

Excellent book. Loved it.

I was already a fan of Jared from his podcast “The Bible for Normal People” with Pete Enns. I love their progressive, Jesus-centric, love-focused take on the Bible and its place in its own culture and ours.

Essential

I am so grateful I read this book. God led me to this book. My family, most of them are conservatives. I have felt so heartbroken, like I’m not allowed to love them, like that’s wrong. But that thought is the wrong one. God wants me to love - that is exactly what God wants me to do. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Fantastic!

A challenging and timely call to love God and others in a time when there is so much divisions among Christians and in our nation at large. Read this book if you feel tension between speaking truth and love. Jared and this book are a gift to the body of Christ as he helps us understand to love as Jesus does.

Uplifting

Struggling along a long path of frustration, hurt and anger with the church, and with well-meaning Christian brothers and sisters, I found this book to be just what I needed.
