Publisher's Summary

For years, Christians have argued, debated, and fought one another while "speaking the truth in love", yet we are no closer to the grace-filled life Jesus modeled. Biblical scholar and popular podcast host of The Bible for Normal People, Jared Byas casts a new vision for the Christian life that's built not on certainty but on the risk of love.

A biblically based Christian life is not grounded in having all the answers but in a living relationship. This ultimately shifts our focus from collecting the "right" answers to loving others deeply and authentically. With stories and insights drawn from his years as a pastor, professor, and podcast host, Jared Byas calls us back to the heart of the Bible: that truth is only true when it's lived out in love.

In a refreshing voice that's both witty and profoundly revelatory, Jared unpacks the concept of truth, its meaning, and why we so often fight over it. He makes a compelling case for how what we believe is less important than how we believe it and that, more than anything else, telling the truth in love is about following Jesus.

For anyone who has ever felt forced to choose between truth and love, acceptance and rightness, this book offers a path forward beyond truth wars and legalistic religion to a love that matters more.

Essential reading

Beautiful, insightful and extremely bold as the book progresses. This should be essential reading for every Christian, if not simply for everyone. I will purchase the book as well so I can go through it with others.

One to listen to every year

Great book. Really appreciated how we can keep the Bible 😄 but read it the way Jesus would have read it: you have heard it said, but I tell you....

Love as the compass we use to figure out how to navigate this present moment. Thank you for this.

Amazing!!!

This book challenges but only towards love. One might think it’s easy, but it’s hard and continuous! The love talked in this book is real, genuine, and leads to truth. I HIGHLY recommend for all Christians!

Masterclass. Favorite book of 2020

Don’t let the title fool you, this is highly academic look into the interpretation of the bible and God himself. However, it oozes with humility and reads like a compassionate love letter to the dearest of friends. While making well grounded arguments, Jared Byas is never afraid to say the three words I wish all religious leaders would say more, “I don’t know.”

This book is a fresh lens in which to view Christianity and what it means to love in all circumstances. I can’t recommend this book highly enough.

Great takeaway

Not everything aligned with 'my' beliefs of Jesus but for someone who allowed rules and expectations to weigh me down, this book shifted my focus to the beauty of loving others and not on me and where I am falling short.

Excellent book. Loved it.

I was already a fan of Jared from his podcast “The Bible for Normal People” with Pete Enns. I love their progressive, Jesus-centric, love-focused take on the Bible and its place in its own culture and ours.

Essential

I am so grateful I read this book. God led me to this book. My family, most of them are conservatives. I have felt so heartbroken, like I’m not allowed to love them, like that’s wrong. But that thought is the wrong one. God wants me to love - that is exactly what God wants me to do. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Clinging to Jesus, while questioning modern religion

A lifeline read If you are looking around at the Church and wondering what the heck is happening. If you were just bopping along thinking all of Christianity was on the same page at least when it came to Jesus, then felt that rug yanked from under you, read it. If you feel alone and lost in your Christian faith because of politics or organized religion, read it. If you are suddenly struggling with family members over faith when you were once aligned, read it. It will convict you to love. I like how much supporting scripture is there. Many excellent insights. Both challenging, and liberating. Shows Jesus as the answer to all of your questions.

A Loving Challenge

Jared lays out what Christ's love looks like in our modern world in a kind, gentle way. His approach emphasizes that love and truth are action verbs and moves the open minded reader to action. This was book was thought provoking and will lead to my intentional seeking of God's Spirit to lead me to love others unconditionally. Whether people I'm in contact with are churched or not, agree with me or not, I will strive, with God's help, to show them acceptance and inclusion. Thank you Jared for this book and imposing the wisdom God certainly has blessed you with. I look forward to hearing more from you whether it's on social media, your podcast, or in another book.

Much Needed todat

In a time where unprecedented division is being exposed in our country on both church and politics, Jared has put together a thoughtful and compassionate way of seeing people as something to be loved and not “won over” to our opinions.
He uses scripture a lot and gives a fresh perspective on its meaning within our culture. This book is for everyone, but not everyone will receive it because, unfortunately, there are still a lot of us who need to hold on to the illusion of truth that’s something that needs to be “upheld”.
Highly recommended.
