Critic Reviews

Absolutely terrific . . . genuinely touching . . . every one of its many characters, no matter how small their part, is beautifully rounded out (Jenny Colgan)
Worth the decade it took to arrive . . . This is a proper family saga, both deliciously old-fashioned and full of surprising reversals (Alex Preston)
Love Marriage is enormously satisfying in its inventions and observations, and its exploration of cultural diversity in Britain. At once touching and satirical . . . as engrossing and enjoyable as Brick Lane (David Sexton)
Monica Ali's rich, sensitive and gloriously entertaining novel . . . brim[s] with extremely funny moments of excruciating social comedy . . . For all its precise comic timing and consummate plotting, the novel's real strength lies in its depiction of complex social encounters, leaving the reader to decide which side, if any, to take . . . [A] love letter to the richness of London life (Tash Aw)
Wildly entertaining . . . Filled with people who are not just likeable, but loveable. This contract of sympathy, which flows between reader and characters, deepens and enriches the portrait of contemporary London that Ali creates with a confident Dickensian sweep (Susie Boyt)
This is such a gloriously vibrant and tender novel packed with wit, intelligence and wisdom. It has everything - clashing cultures, family rifts, suppressed addictions, desire, passion. Her two junior doctor protagonists are superbly drawn - flawed, courageous, flailing, human. Just brilliant (Rachel Clarke)
Funny, warm, powerful . . . Love Marriage has a warm intelligence and a sharp observational power, making the characters and the world of the story feel very alive (Diana Evans)
A truly astonishing piece of writing - exquisite storytelling, featuring the most human portrayal of doctors I've ever read. I defy you to put this book down (Adam Kay)

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were all interesting, not just the main two or three but all of them. Very believable. I wanted a romance that wasn't just fluff and this was perfect.

Great characters and narration

Could have been a shorter novel, but overall, I was hooked. Wanted something not dark or depressing and this was an interesting story about how we see our parents, love and different kinds of friendships and relationships.

Enjoyed this during my week in iso!

The characters were complex and flawed and each one evolved throughout the story. Engaging and thought provoking , life is complex and we can never completely know another person’s story or motivation.

A great listen

An engrossing story. So well written, the detail was extraordinary. Engaging from the first page to the last. Ayesha Dharker narrated this superbly. I loved listening to her and the life she brought to Monica Ali’s characters. Loved it all

Loved everything about this

I found this book by mistake - got the title wrong of the novel we’d picked at book club. So pleased I did as this was a fantastic read. It turned out to be so much more complex and intriguing than first appeared. The narration was excellent - loved all the characters’ voices but especially the voice the narrator gave Anissa, just magic. Highly recommend this book!

Stumbled on this gem by chance and so glad I did
