Publisher's Summary

When a simple mix-up leaves their father Joe’s estate to Eden, their long-absent mother, Clare and Aaron decide it’s finally time to track Eden down. But it’s been over thirty years since she left their remote outback mining town, and they’ve never heard from her again.

Aaron is dealing with a new marriage that’s currently trapped in immigration limbo, and his teenage daughter Cady is clearly going through a personal crisis of her own. After decades away, Clare has flown home from New York for Joe’s funeral, leaving her high-powered job and her not-quite-fiancé behind for what she thinks will be a short trip.

Neither Aaron or Clare are prepared for a fight for their inheritance against the mother who abandoned them as children. As they dig through years of secrets and lies in their tiny community to uncover the truth about Eden and Joe, will they notice the more immediate danger that threatens their family?

Misandry and Feminism

The storyline seemed fine in the beginning but the more it went on it was clear this was a socio-political movement inspired story portraying many stereotypical traits of males. From potentially domestic violence, drunken men ogling over scantly dressed women, desperate men falling in love with women from a disadvantaged country, and a love crazed police officer. The author even went as far to add grooming of a minor by a middle aged male. All while a strong single woman dominates at life

A fantastic read.

Another terrific story from Caroline.

I’ve always been a fan of her work in ‘traditional’ book form. It’s even better to be able to listen on the go. The chapters are a perfect length for a quick listen on the commute or during my lunch break.

Would 100% recommend.

The ending did not belong to this book

I was really enjoying this; the story was a gentle mystery about family secrets and small country towns. The narration was excellent.
And then right at the end it took an ubrupt turn and changed into a completely different story. Ruined the whole thing.

This really didn't work for me

I love good Australian drama. Unfortunately this didn't fit the bill. I don't think the story knew what it was about. It had a weird divergence right at the end and the main story line got wrapped up in an odd fashion.

Don’t read the last two chapters

As the story was developing amazingly, out of the sudden, the writer decided, our native someone’s decided, that she needs to write about self wellbeing and empowering women in a very vague and direct way. So she did. Then she remembers that there’s a story that needs to be ended, so she did too, quickly, obviously.

Caroline Overington doesn't disappoint

I really enjoyed this book, good narration, the story was good, I like the characters. I liked that there wasn't a 'baddie' just people with flaws. At times I thought this book was a little bit roses and sunshine, especially when it came to the teenager(her internal dialogue), but I still really enjoyed it. Thank you Caroline!

Fantastic must-read! Way to start 2023

I loved this book!! I hadn’t read (listened to) this author before, but this was absolutely fantastic. The story kept me on the edge of my seat, I loved the characters, and I loved the twist. I didn’t see it coming, which is rare for me!
Truly a fantastic book. What a great way to start 2023
Thank you Caroline! I’m a new fan - going back to listen to your other stuff

Beautiful

This book was incredible. I’m so moved by the story and the bittersweet ending. I lost my mum in 2021 and this story of love had me completely entranced. Brilliant.

A delightful Australian book.

Written and performed with true understanding of Australian culture. Not the sort of book I usually read but this was an unexpected treasure.
