About this listen

Reconstructive facial surgery after a car crash so alters Manhattan model Charlotte that, within the fashion world, where one's look is oneself, she is unrecognisable. Seeking a new image, Charlotte engages in an Internet experiment that may both save and damn her.

As her story eerily converges with that of a plain, unhappy teenager - another Charlotte - it raises tantalising questions about identity and reality in contemporary Western culture.

Jennifer Egan's bold, innovative novel, demonstrating her virtuosity at weaving a spellbinding, ambitious tale with language that dazzles, captures the spirit of our times and offers an unsettling glimpse of the future.

You certainly can’t go wrong spending some time in the company of a mind like Jennifer Egan’s. She gets it all: from her descriptions of nascent sexuality to her excavation of what it means to subordinate one’s personal history to the goal of international terrorism, one imagines that Egan has somehow read the code book of human psychology. The characters, without fail, seem utterly distinct—in voice, in tone, in motivation—and also utterly real.

As for the narration, I found it engaging and thoughtful, even if one very minor character’s ostensibly Australian accent sounded to me, an Australian, as it came from a foreign country. The narrator was particularly charming when she took on the voice of the young Charlotte and her mother.

All in all, a rewarding audiobook experience that I’d unhesitatingly recommend to fans of Jennifer Egan and of perceptive modern fiction in general.

Excellent narration and Jennifer Egan can’t be bettered
