Summary

From the Booker Prize longlisted author of The Wall, comes his first novel in eight years.

What if the year's most talked about TV show was all about your marriage?

Kate, 30 years into her marriage, has a seemingly idyllic metropolitan, North London life.

Phoebe, a young screenwriter, is the creator of the year's hit TV show, Cheating.

When Kate's world takes a darker turn, she thinks she sees details and intimacies in the show that only she and her husband Jack could possibly have known. But who has betrayed who? Who gets to tell whose story?

A black comedy of resentment and entitlement, Look What You Made Me Do is the story of two very different women from two very different generations, heading toward a battle only one of them can win.

I found this story totally compelling, but I do think the writer could tone down his characterisation a tad. Surely we didn’t need to read so many examples of how awful the mother, Sarah is? In fact there are no likeable characters (apart from Tony) which is fine. But a bit more nuance was needed. I think.

Over done but a good read.

So very clever and so very awful. There is a delightful twist but one of the main characters is so unbelievably evil that I grew to despise them. I think it shows that actually the author is very good but now I can only remember the novel with dread

A truely evil character

The book was filled with unpleasant. Characters who felt less like humans than Chekhov’s guns. The bulk of the narrative was setup to build towards a twist. Beyond the characters, the writing of the book itself felt cynical, as if the author is churning out content.

Cynical with hollow characters and bad dialogue

I persevered as I wanted to honour the book club. This book was incredibly negative and unkind. It was full of spite and revenge, everything against what I stand for. If it was meant to be humorous, it certainly didn’t cut it for me.

Worst book ever
