Story
A fresh, challenging and compassionate response to busyness, based on the way of life Jesus offered his disciples. Who are you becoming? That was the question nagging pastor and author John Mark Comer. By outward metrics, everything appeared successful. But inwardly, things weren't pretty. So he turned to a trusted mentor for guidance and heard these words: 'Ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life. Hurry is the great enemy of the spiritual life.' It wasn't the response he expected, but it continues to be the answer he needs.

Story
“If anyone knows how to be a pastor in the contemporary context that person is Eugene Peterson. Eugene possesses the rare combination of a pastor’s heart and a pastor’s art. Take and read!” (Richard J. Foster, author of Celebration of Discipline) “I’ve been nagging Eugene Peterson for years to write a memoir. In our clamorous, celebrity-driven, entertainment culture, his life and words convey a quiet whisper of sanity, authenticity, and, yes, holiness.” (Philip Yancey, author of What Good is God)

What is his will for us today? Drawing on the Sermon on the Mount, Dietrich Bonhoeffer answers these timeless questions by providing a seminal reading of the dichotomy between "cheap grace" and "costly grace."

Story
We live in a time when our culture is becoming increasingly shallow, coarse, and empty. Radical shifts in the areas of sexuality, ethics, technology, secular ideologies, and religion have caused the once-familiar landscape of a generation ago to be virtually unrecognizable. Yet rather than shine as a beacon of light, the church often is silent or accommodating. This isn’t a new phenomenon. During World War II, pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer was deeply troubled by the compromise in the German church.

Many of us ache for relationship with God, yet feel distant and disconnected from him. As if he's more of an idea we believe in our head than a person we relate to. But God has a name: Yahweh. This one simple idea has the potential to radically alter how you relate to God, not as a doctrine, but as a relational being who responds to you in an elastic, back-and-forth way.

And about what is wrong - the fallout in a post-Eden world. Loveology starts with marriage and works backward.

There is a timeless wisdom about this book.
Peterson gives a variety of practical wisdom using the palms as a starting point. I loved the emphasis on not allowing feelings to "call the shots." You can't control feelings, only behavior. eventually feelings will follow the behavior, waiting to behave a certain way because you feel it is not wisdom.

I wish I had read this 15 years ago!!!!!
I first heard of Eugene Peterson (as more Han the translator of The Message) when I watched a video of a conversation between U2’s Bono, and himself. He captivated me. I’ve wanted to read his book for a couple of years and finally bought it an audible. The performance by Lloyd James was fantastic. And Eugene’s writings on the Psalms of Ascents - and what they teach us about our walk with and toward Christ and Our Creator - is at once the the most beautiful and the most relevant Christian theology book I have ever read. Thank you, Eugene!!!

A Guide into Christian Discipleship for the rest of us
I was exposed to Eugene Peterson through his autobiography “The Pastor.” His simple, and yet profound way of communicating truth through story and scripture captivated my heart and directed my eyes heavenward.
A Long Obedience presents Christian discipleship through meditations on the Psalms of ascent, 120-134, is another story filled winsome gem. Chapter after chapter reveals the trustworthy, equipping, sustaining heart of the heavenly Father for the Christian pilgrim as he or she journeys through the hardships and joys of this life towards our eternal home. It isn’t a 12 step methodology, nor a “Celebration of Disciplines.” It is more a Celebration of God, his faithfulness, how He loves his people, and is leading, restoring, and forming them with every step they take.

I read this book many years ago and wanted to go through it again. It’s probably better to read than listen because of its depth but still great either way. The reader does a good job conveying the intent of the writer. Also, I’m glad they Included the epilogue.

Brilliant
I think this book is useful for all Christians, whatever our maturity. Eugene Peterson is such an inspiring man and gives such wisdom. I have been a Christian for many years, but i still got so much out of this book. It is helpful for living our lives out as Christians - not in formulaic ways, but examining the principles in scripture so that we can prayerfully then live them out together, in community.
