Pojken Göran växer upp i Hälsingland som son till en sågverksarbetare. Fadern uppmanar honom att fortsätta i samma fotspår, men Göran vill inte utsätta sig för det hårda och farliga arbetet. Men slita får han när han utauktionerats till en bondgård efter det att modern dör och spriten sätter klorna i fadern.
