Pubblicato nel 1869, Dostoevskij ha scritto L'idiota in un momento molto difficile della sua vita; iniziandone la stesura a Ginevra nel 1867 per terminarla poi, dopo averne distrutto una prima bozza, a Firenze nel 1868.

Tutta l'opera è centrata su tre figure cardine: Rogožin, che rappresenta l'eros, la passione, l'amore violento, il principe Miškin, il protagonista del romanzo, che rappresenta invece l'amore fraterno e disinteressato, l'amore platonico di impossibile realizzazione, e Nastasja, la figura femminile centrale, la quale, in un punto cruciale del romanzo, dice: "nell'amore astratto si finisce quasi sempre per amare sé stessi".

Dostoevskij lascia che l'uomo e la vita stessa si raccontino nella loro enorme complessità e contraddittorietà. "L'uomo è un mistero, un mistero che bisogna risolvere, e se passerai tutta la vita a cercare di risolverlo, non dire che hai perso tempo; io studio questo mistero perché voglio essere un uomo."
