A short word, before the first story.
What follows is a collection of very old Zen stories. None of them are mine. They were told by teachers to students long before any of us were here, kept and repeated for centuries because each one does something quietly useful to the person who hears it. I have only opened a door in front of each one, and left you something small at the end.
This is the second of three short books. The first, A Quiet Night, was for the dark, for the nights the mind will not rest. If you have listened to it, welcome back. If you are starting here, you have lost nothing. Each book stands on its own.
Where the first book asked nothing of you, this one is for the daylight. These twelve stories are about the things we carry long after we could have put them down: the grudge, the verdict, the old mistake, the resentment we keep quietly on the books. Each one ends with something small you can actually do. So listen to these when you are awake enough to use them, not when you are trying to fall asleep.
