Alors que le narrateur vient d'apprendre qu'il sera bientôt père d'une petite fille, le téléphone sonne. À l'autre bout du fil, sa mère. Le bateau de son père, Jean, vient de sombrer "corps et biens". Jamais Jean ne saura que sa petite-fille s'appellera Louise.
Peut-être pour lui rendre hommage, peut-être pour apaiser son chagrin, le narrateur se met alors à écrire le roman de ce coquillier blanc et bleu, Ar c'hwil, né presque en même temps que lui. Derrière l'histoire du bateau, c'est celle du père, de ses peines et de ses drames qui se profile. Mais aussi celle d'une famille, faite d'amour filial et fraternel. Une famille simple, où la pudeur des sentiments est de mise.
