Publisher's Summary

Contains books one and two of Legend of Tal, a sword-and-sorcery, coming-of-age adventure.

A King's Bargain, book one

The legend of Tal Harrenfel is sung across the Westreach, and with each telling, the tales grow taller.

Though he's declared a hero by his king, Tal has never claimed to be more than a man. After three decades of fighting warlocks, killing mythical beasts, and hunting enchanted treasure, Tal has had enough. Running from the deeds of his past, he retreats to his home village under a different name and meets an unlikely companion: Garin, a village boy who dreams of making a name for himself and seeing the world beyond their sleepy town.

When Tal receives a mysterious visitor, both he and Garin find themselves thrown into a sojourn across the kingdom. Soon, they become embroiled in the plots of monarchs, on the frontlines of an ancient war, and at the mercy of a fabled sorcerer. Now Tal must live up to his legend, and Garin must discover his own power, to survive the forces pitted against them.

A Queen's Command, book two

The legend of Tal Harrenfel lives on, and a new song spreads across the Westreach.

Though Tal and Garin overcame one enemy, victory promises to be short-lived. Garin struggles with his inner demons. Tal is haunted by enemies and memories alike. And a long-kept secret has torn a rift between them.

But circumstances force them to continue their travels together. The roads from Avendor to Gladelyl, once the safest in the Westreach, are rife with danger. And Tal is bound to the commands of the Elf Queen whose intentions are unforeseeable. But reaching the elven realm is only the beginning of their troubles, for Gladelyl is in turmoil. The nobles grasp for power. The underclass and Eastern immigrants seek new rights. And an ancient enemy takes advantage of the chaos to turn them all against each other. Now Garin must come to terms with his demons.

Offensive language disappoints.

Offensive language spoiled what might have been an enjoyable listen. Doesn't enhance a storyline and is unnecessary for demonstrating a writer's skill; in fact, detracts from it.

Love this series

A great listen, Derek Perkins always does a great job narrating. It's an interesting world with all the fantasy characters you could ask for - elves, dwarves and beasts - but with a twist. Garin can be a bit whiny at times and his storyline is a bit slow to develop but Tal is such an interesting character!

Immerse yourself in a new realm

To my mind the test of a fantasy novel is simply that I go there. I often wonder how fantasy authors function in the real world, when they obviously live somewhere else.
Loved the two protagonists and the unpredictable plot.

Enjoyed listening

Really good adventure book. Great story line, captivating. Performance was great: clear voice, clear change between different characters. The only nuance was - it took me a couple of chapters to get used to the reader's voice- to be precise - main character sounded much older then his age in the story.

seems like another weak spineless mc novel

ok so I'm about an hour or two into this book. 3 characters are traveling together. the "Legendary" Tal, a super powerful mage on direct assignment from the king sent to retrieve Tal from his self imposed banishment, and the young apprentice/friend/maybe son or close relation to the Legendary Tal not sure yet but tal seems to have a connection to him that hasn't been revealed yet. ok so these bird snake things show up in a flock and attack. they get their weak asses kicked and the snake chickens go after the cowardly apprentice (that ran like a coward) then the only thing that saves him is this evil spirit that has managed to hitch a ride in the cowards mind because he is a weakling with no will power. what is with all this weakling trash being peddled. the most badass dude in the land who the whole first chapter is dedicated to telling us all these badass things he has done and his name is feared and hated by the entire world gets his ass rolled by some snake chickens in the first couple hours screw this I'm out

crasp and crude

I am glad this was free because i would want my money back. It was not as interesting as i thought. The story didn't grip me as other similar stories have, and this book should have a rating so that I and others would know that this author likes to throw out the f bomb plenty. Once is too much. After the first book i just could take the f bombs and immoral evil king. I guess I will have to be more careful next time to find a book that entertains on my standards.
And the way their magic works and is looped.into thr story is too limiting and uninteresting.

Wonderful traditional fantasy adventure

Yes, it is in many ways a story that is familiar, but the world building and character development is great. I like the familiar feel of a traditional epic in a new place. I have spent a couple years trying to enjoy books that kept falling short. For me this one got everything right. The characters feel like home.

Enjoyed this read!

it has a lot of common fantasy novel narrative but....... I really enjoyed it about the second book and continuing on. it is filled my last two weeks with very pleasant storyline. the good guy wins just at the right moment! it's so hard to find stories that don't have graphic sex and ludeness. I'm not a prude but I just don't want to get that out of my fantasy novel. I'd rather hear about dragons and swords and heroes. Not all this other stuff that I get every day in the media.

Great series right up there with Ryan, Abercrombie, Hamilton and Cobble!

Great new series that I would rate in my top 5 authors. I truly enjoyed the book and the orator was exceptionally good. I really enjoyed the first 2 books and can’t wait to start the third.

Not exactly a copy with variations of people's & animals. Similar to others, yet his own. With magics of various kinds & heroes in various forms.

Fun and very well paced

While some have pointed out Tal’s less than legendary moments as proof of an unbelievable plot, those moments underpin the main flaw of the hero character. It’s the man versus himself storyline and serves to help set the next leg of interactions between characters. Overall it was an entertaining tale, well told.

No clue what this is really about

Although well performed and from time to time engaging, i really have no idea what this is about. The story is hidden in special legends, wierd named elven tree names, a boy who learns skills through a demon that posesses him, sometimes or whatever. It just never delivers on its promise...i used it for three weeks to fall asleep because i loose the story so quickly lol...now im just a bit anoyed by it :)

Shallow

Quite disappointed with this. No surprises, no plot twists. Only a new version of an ages old story about master and apprentice. Paper-thin plot and no particularly interesting characters. Maybe I'm just spoiled by actually good stories.

Just excellent!

I have not been sleeping well and this book was included with Audible, and I thought I would let it play in the background. My plan didn’t work, because it proved an wonderful story and Derick Perkins is a fantastic narrator. I gave up listening at bedtime and gave it my full attention during the day.

High fantasy with enough to keep listening

The story seemed overly predictable and most of the lead characters were hard to warm till. certain timings of happening feels rushed especially when it came to action. but generally a good listen for those that want a book to get through a work pass

Decent although derivative

Hard as it must be for any fantasy writer, to not plagiarise Tolkien, this book should have themes familiar to any Hobbit.
That said, it's still a good story, and one I will continue with purchasing the next volume.
Oh, I nearly forgot, the narration is tip top.

Enjoyable fantasy

Good usual fantasy stuff. Nice characters. The only regret I had was that there wasn’t more mention of the elves eyes , in particular if gold was swirling in them. Sometimes a whole paragraph would go by without it being mentioned.

Super derivative

It's basically a copy of Lord of the rings combined with Name of the wind. Also opens with an exaggeratedly uninteresting bucolic event to do with finding chicken. It's really boring fantasy.
