About this listen

From the author of the genre-breaking international TikTok sensation Butcher & Blackbird: the second book in the Ruinous Love Trilogy - a hate-to-love dark romantic comedy packed with danger, chaos, and heat.

----

Every killer claims a soul.
Every phantom wants revenge.

All contract killer Lachlan Kane wants is a quiet life. But when he botches a job for his boss's biggest client, Lachlan knows he'll never claw his way out of the underworld. At least, not until Lark Montague offers him a deal: use his skills to hunt down a killer and she'll find a way to secure his freedom.

The catch? He has to marry her first. And they can't stand each other.

Indie singer-songwriter Lark may seem like sunshine and glitter personified but she has her own secrets hiding in the shadows. With her formidable family in a tailspin and her best friend's happiness on the line, she's willing to make a vow to the man she's determined to hate, no matter how tempting the broody assassin might be.

As Lachlan and Lark navigate the dark world that binds them together, it becomes impossible to discern their fake marriage from a real one. But it's not just familiar dangers that haunt them. There's another phantom lurking on their doorstep . . . And this one has come for blood.

What a great follow up to B&B. And the narration was ON POINT!!! Loved loved loved it all. This is written so beautifully. Equal parts funny, tragic and dark. I am so glad it was recommended to me. I'm so grateful to have found this author!!

Butcher and Blackbird was brilliant, I didn’t think it could be topped but Lachlan and Larks story had everything, the narration was outstanding and who doesn’t love an Irish accent. The storyline was great, I wish I could listen again for the first time.

Just awesome, 10/10

This was absolutely hilarious! I had a little trouble with a few minor things in the book but overall it was really good and had me smiling and laughing throughout the whole thing!

Funny as hell!

4.5 stars. Every bit as good as the first one. Good lord, why can't I find a Kane brother. That accent (hearing it on audio) is just to die for. And die happy.

I love the forced marriage trope in this book (and when he utters his vows in Gaelic...drool), it pairs well with the first book. The details we learn about both (particularly their childhood/teen years that shaped them to be the way they are) endeared me to both of them. Their on again off again relationship was a fun ride and the witty banter is absolutely on fire. I had lots of laughs out loud moments while listening to this. The author is very clever at this.

My two slight gripes were 1 - I thought the wrap up with the villain was a bit too quick. The suspense in that situation could have gone a tad longer to get the heart racing. And 2 - most of their laughter/giggles on audio were too fake/forced. It was a tad cringey. But other than that, the voices were fantastic. I love that it was a proper dual narration, not a chapter for each narrator. It flows so much better this way, even having the voices overlapping was a notch higher than some narrations. I was surprised when I realised they were recorded separately because it sounded so realistic.

I absolutely cannot wait to get the next one. This was my first ever pre-order book.

A perfect follow up (and that Irish accent...yum)

Not quite on par with book 1 in the series but still great and worth listening to if you enjoyed the first one. Duet performances are the best.

Another enjoyable addition to this series

I enjoyed this book and think it was a great follow up to Butcher and Blackbird. I like the connection that Lachlan and Lark build over the time. I do find the fakeness of the laughs of the characters incredibly off-putting. The stress that Lachlan goes through when Lark disappears shows the depth of how much she means, even though it started in a very non-traditional way.

Good Build up

Hands down enjoyed this more than Butcher and Blackbird!! Even though B&B had more plot with its romance, I loved the focus on Lark and Lachlan’s relationship, their character development and their chemistry. There were plenty of laughs in this one, and the perfect amount of spice.

A ‘feckin’ catastrophe’
