Story
Why do some people achieve great personal success, yet never succeed in building a business or making an impact in their organization? John C. Maxwell knows the answer. According to Maxwell, the greatest leadership principle that he has ever learned in over thirty-five years of leadership is that those closest to the leader will determine the success level of that leader. It's not enough for a leader to have vision, energy, drive, and conviction. If you want to see your dream come to fruition, you must learn how to develop the leaders around you.

In Leadershift, John C. Maxwell helps listeners make leadership changes that will positively enhance their organizational and personal growth. He does this by sharing the 11 shifts he made over the course of his long and successful leadership career. Each shift changed his trajectory and set him up for new and exciting achievements, strengthening and sustaining his leadership abilities and making him the admired leadership expert he is today.
Among those leadershifts are “the Adaptive Shift from Plan A to Option A,” “the Production Shift from Ladder Climbing to Ladder Building,” and “the Influence Shift from Positional Authority to Moral Authority.” Maxwell gives specific guidance about how to make these shifts in their own lives. Each one requires them to change the way they think, act, and ultimately lead so they can be successful in a world that never remains the same.

Excellent
This book has inspired me in so many ways.
John is so easy to listen to and I love the side notes at the end of each chapter.
Johns distinctions on leadership built confidence inwardly. There are many great attributes you will recognise you do naturally and I didn’t even realise they were leadership skills. Identifying those skills was great.
What I also loved is opening my mind to create new learnings to lead a team that were simple to understand and most important they are really actionable, in Johns delivery.
I wrote a lot of notes and after the book I’m reading now I want to go back and re read. This will be a book to re read on multiple occasions as you grow as a leader.
I have also got a team incentive running this month and the team that win receive a copy. I would love my entire team read LeaderShift.
Thanks John incredible book.
With kindness and a love of growth

If you only read one leadership book...
This book is an amazing compilation of what one of the most talented and experienced leaders learned through his 70 + years. I had the pleasure of hearing John Maxwell speak years ago, and have read two of his previous books. It just keeps getting better and better. This book describes the evolution of a leader and I've never read anything quite like this. It's fascinating to hear him describe the changes and growth he realized over the years, and it is a great inspiration to develop into an extraordinary leader. After hearing this book I ordered 12 hard cover copies to go through with my management team.

Inspiring!
I love hearing the book in the author’s own voice. The content of the book was easy to follow, highly applicable and very inspiring! Each chapter urged me toward a desire for greatness in the hopes to inspire others and great value in others. The interviews at the end were icing on the cake. The thought behind the three very different leaders/stories/speaking styles was genius. The question/answer with John added such insight and value. I want to listen to it again.

Automatic Transmission Overhaul!
The GMC Step-side pickup truck that once belonged to my father one day stopped shifting gears. My strong curiosity got the best of me and I convinced myself I could fix it on my own. Now, if you're a mechanic you probably know how crazy this sounds.
It was a 4L60E automatic transmission. I found a parts distributor called Transtar really close to where I worked. I ordered a transmission overhaul kit and stopped by the shop to pick it up. When I told the salesperson I was the one doing the work he turned pale and said it would be nearly impossible for anyone to successfully do this having never done it before, but if I was going to spend the money and time I'd better follow him to his office.
For the next 3-hours this master mechanic went over in full detail the operations and techniques I would need to follow in exact order, with exact tolerances, and zero errors. Almost all of the information was in 'pictorial diagrams' and 'exploded view charts'. Imagine a picture that shows a piece, inside a part, inside another part, connected to a bigger part, and so on.
Long story short, I built that transmission three times before feeling comfortable enough to reinstall it back into the truck where it is today running even better than it did when my dad drove it off of the showroom floor thanks to the high performance shift-kit I added. If you want anything bad enough you too can be successful!
That to say, 'Leadershift' was to my personal development what the 3-hour talk with the master mechanic was to my transmission rebuild. The lessons from John Maxwell reminds me of the pictorial diagrams and exploded views along with all the techniques and tolerances needed for a successful rebuild. The lessons from John Maxwell fit like pieces, inside parts, within even larger parts, and so on.. only this time it wasn't my transmission, but my transformation.. not a gear shift, but a 'Leadershift'!
Get ready for your overhaul!!
Don't take my word for it.. Check it out!
What did you think?

Good points buried by just repeating "leadershift"
Do you have the patience the hear someone use a made up word several times per sentence, several sentences in a row, as he keeps trying to make leadershift / leadershifting a word every ten to twenty seconds? I'd you can tolerate that without being distracted or annoyed by it, you'll likely be able to mine some beneficial ideas from this material and the author's experience. I have determined I cannot, and I wish I'd used this credit differently before a long flight.

Good reason for shifts to address current day
Most authors draw examples from their previous works, that is true here, but with a number of new lessons. These new lessons can be revaluations that garner a modern perspective to emphasize the need to shift.
I liked the book and come away with renewed commitment to challenge past thinking.
There is a collection of conference speaker recordings at the end that are worth a listen.

insightful and thought provoking
I found this book thought provoking and insightful. John's anacdotes and stories help put into context his messages on challenging your thought processes. Messages I have taken from this are to be consistent, practicing what you say, and don't be afraid to make mistakes - that's how we learn. Not everything we do is easy, but it will get easier with time and practice.
