Le inseparabili, che viene pubblicato in contemporanea con la Francia da Ponte alle Grazie e dunque in prima mondiale, è il racconto romanzato della straordinaria amicizia tra Simone de Beauvoir e Zaza (Elisabeth) Lacoin, dal loro incontro a scuola, nel pieno della Prima guerra mondiale, alla morte di Zaza nel 1929. La narratrice Sylvie/Simone è immediatamente sedotta da Andrée/Zaza, bambina intelligente e ribelle: le due diverranno inseparabili, nonostante l'ostilità della famiglia di Andrée, un clan ultracattolico dalle tradizioni rigidissime.

Ma se l'amicizia riuscirà a sottrarsi all'ambiente oppressivo in cui Andrée è costretta, lo stesso non verrà per la ragazza, schiacciata dall'annullamento dell'individualità che le è richiesto. Così la commovente storia di un'amicizia è anche una denuncia nei confronti di una società bigotta e ipocrita, incapace di accettare ciò che sfugge alla sua gretta meschineria. Simone de Beauvoir scrisse Le inseparabili nel 1954 e, pur avendo deciso di non pubblicarlo, conservò il manoscritto. 

Oggi, finalmente ritrovato, è una grande scoperta letteraria: sebbene Sylvie/Simone tenta nel racconto di annullarsi nell'amica, emerge chiaramente il suo percorso, divergente, che le permetterà non solo di salvarsi, ma anche di diventare una figura fondamentale nella storia dell'emancipazione femminile nel Novecento.
