L'homme qui possède la clef du jardin est autorisé, lorsqu'il le désire, à dormir dans la remise. Qui plus est, "La Griotte" a été aperçu, le soir du crime, pénétrant dans le jardin de Mlle Fabrègue. Tout irait pour le mieux pour le substitut, si "La Griotte" n'avait pas un alibi inaltérable. C'est alors au Commissaire Rosic d'entrer en jeu pour démêler cette histoire de faux semblants.
