En 1955, Jean Genet rencontre Abdallah Bentaga, un jeune acrobate, avec lequel il vit sa plus belle et dramatique histoire d'amour. Il lui dédie Le Funambule, un long poème amoureux, mais aussi une réflexion sur les voies de la création : variations sur une dramaturgie du cirque, du théâtre et de la danse. Dans L'Enfant criminel, dont l'édition originale de 1949 fut censurée, l'auteur raconte son passage après ses premiers larcins dans des maisons de correction de l'assistance publique et dévoile "le mystère de ces bagnes pour enfants".
