About this listen

THE DAZZLING NEW NOVEL FROM THE MASTER OF CRIME

He had been here, that was clear from the marks in the dust. And he had been alone.

In a dying town, Ro Crowley waits for her son on the evening of his 21st birthday.

But Sam never comes home. His footprints in the dust of three abandoned houses offer the only clue to his final movements. One set in. One set out.

Five long years later, Ro returns to Carralon Ridge for the annual memorial of Sam's disappearance. The skeletal community is now an echo of itself, having fractured under the pressure of the coal mine operating on its outskirts.

But Ro still wants answers. Only a few people remain. If the truth is to be found in that town, does it lie among them?

I was captured from the first page & thought the story was compelling & believable. My main feeling about it though was the sadness. It’s been there in all her books, but for some reason this one seemed darker. The narrator was good, and it’s so nice to have an Australian voice.

Such an amazing storyteller

The readers constant swallowing was awful. I had to finish the book with a paperback.

I had high hopes for this book, the summary caught my interest but sadly it was very drawn out. It felt like moving through molasses making progress in the story. I persisted in listening to it as I had used a credit to purchase the book. The narrator did their best.

Drawn out & bland

Really really good. Not fast paced but didnt need to be. A heartfelt and desperate mystery that unravels and becomes unveiled. Twists, turns and long held secrets but kept me guessing. Very well written and narrated.

Long awaited and not disappointed

I’m at city slicker born and bred but I really got a feeling for what it’s like in a small country town when big business comes along and rips at the fabric of what it is to be part of the town brilliant

Simply brilliant Thought provoking and gripping from start to finish

It was very slow, I found it hard to keep focused on the story and characters. Listening to the book I’m usually doing other things while listening, I found I kept switching off to the story and having to rewind to re-listen.

Not Jane’s best
