Ignoring self-doubts and their kids’ concerns, two aging Midwestern widows Ann and Donna resolve to hit the road - the mother road, Historic Route 66 - if they can find what’s left of it, in a dinged, 20-year-old roadster.
They are primed for a break from routines, but don’t anticipate facing down personal demons, being enticed by the possibility of relocation, or finding romance on this supposedly innocent road trip. Nor are they prepared for the serious challenges that await their return.
The narrators don't anticipate the improbable source of the brief but bizarre disruptions to the telling of Ann and Donna’s story. But stuff happens. And this stuff definitely demands reporting.
