Seventeen-year-old Liza is happy working as a lady's maid - until her employers decide to emigrate and her father makes up his mind that she is to wed an older widower whom she detests. She feels she has no choice but to go with them to Australia, and they all set out on the long voyage.

I stumbled upon this by accident and the name caught my attention as I was born near Lancashire and immigrated to Perth. Really loved this story, it was a great insight into how life was for women in the 1800’s and also the challenges of settling in a new country and passage by sea. The narrator was fantastic too!

Anna Jacob's is an excellent author and I cannot wait to read another one of her books.

A lovely descriptive most real story it felt like I was included into another era with everything in it. I would love a sequel.

All the women in this book seem to spend thier lives sobbing, gets a bit irritating after while, gave up listening about half way, won’t bother with the second book
