Broke, almost homeless, and recently fired. Those are my official reasons for answering a wanted ad for a skeevy-looking bartender gig. It went downhill the moment they asked me to do a trial shift instead of an interview - to see if I'd mesh with their "special" clientele. I think that part went great. Their customers were complete dickheads, and I was an asshole right back. That's the definition of fitting in, right? I expected to get thrown out on my ass. Instead, they...offered me the job? It turns out this place isn't a bar. It's a guild.

In a realm where one’s magical power determines one’s worth, Lady Everleigh’s lack of obvious ability relegates her to the shadows of the royal court of Bellona, a kingdom steeped in gladiator tradition. Seventeenth in line for the throne, Evie is nothing more than a ceremonial fixture, overlooked and mostly forgotten. But dark forces are at work inside the palace. When her cousin Vasilia, the crown princess, assassinates her mother the queen and takes the throne by force, Evie is also attacked, along with the rest of the royal family.

Publisher's Summary
In this thrilling and suspenseful fantasy set in the world of the New York Times best-selling Others series, an inn owner and her shape-shifting lodger find themselves enmeshed in danger and dark secrets.
Human laws do not apply in the territory controlled by the Others--vampires, shape-shifters, and even deadlier paranormal beings. And this is a fact that humans should never, ever forget....
After her divorce, Vicki DeVine took over a rustic resort near Lake Silence, in a human town that is not human controlled. Towns such as Vicki's don't have any distance from the Others, the dominant predators who rule most of the land and all of the water throughout the world. And when a place has no boundaries, you never really know what is out there watching you.
Vicki was hoping to find a new career and a new life. But when her lodger, Aggie Crowe--one of the shape-shifting Others--discovers a murdered man, Vicki finds trouble instead. The detectives want to pin the death on her, despite the evidence that nothing human could have killed the victim. As Vicki and her friends search for answers, ancient forces are roused by the disturbance in their domain. They have rules that must not be broken--and all the destructive powers of nature at their command.

Solid Anne Bishop - narration sub par
This narrator drained almost all of the enjoyment out of this experience for me. I found her accent/intonations and treatment of punctuation pretty unpleasant, but it was her character accents/voices meandering like a drunk driver that really tipped me over the edge. In back and forth character conversations the voices blurred into each other and made it hard to follow, and WTF was with her Sanguinatti voices? Yikes. Just. Pick. A. Lane. And preferably an accent you can 'do'.
The were periods of lengthy 'narrator' voice that indicated she COULD be enjoyable to listen to when neutral, so it was her character choices that grated on me. To be very fair I don't know if the accents she was going for are indicative of the region of the US that corresponds to this region of Thaisia.
The story is a solid enjoyable Anne Bishop in the world of the Others. Humans are unbelievably stupid shallow and evil. Except for the designated Good Humans who exhibit basic courtesy. The others hate and mistrust all humans who are just 'clever meat' except for the designated Good Humans, who they fiercely protect almost instantly for no better reason than the aforementioned basic courtesy. Given just how easy it is to get along with the Others, and just how inevitably fatal it is to be a dick it gets hard to believe humans can keep on being SO STUPID. But then you turn on the news and think ' Yeah, I guess it is not a stretch'.
I like Vicki's character, it's nice to not have the lead be a stupendously beautiful ingenue. I always have a soft spot for practical characters.

Couldn’t stop listening
Great voice to listen to. The story was good, just like the other books. A very good and tidy ending to the story. I liked the characters of the Others especially those that live in the lake. It really helped to have listened to the previous books for the back story. I am looking forward to more books. The story was similar but not a repeat of the other books.

What made the experience of listening to Lake Silence the most enjoyable?
An outstanding new storyline in one of my favourite series!
Any additional comments?

Terrific stand-alone Others novel
First, I've read all the Others novels as they were released and loved some of them, so I was eagerly awaiting this novel. I was concerned that there was unlikely to be crossover from characters in the earlier novels, since that is so much of what I've loved.
Well, my worry was unfounded, because the new characters are as perfectly flawed and struggling as those in the Lakeside Courtyard. I especially loved the way the aftermath of an abusive relationship was a primary plot arc - and even more the way that men who range from manipulative to downright exploitative operate, and how to some extent they need the victim because they need the abuse. All without ever preaching! Instead, Lake Silence is a beautiful exploration of what happens when the vulnerable and soft prey finds itself allied with a much larger predator than anything trying to eat the duckling! And the importance of treating strangers well, lest they be - as the Greeks and many cultures have believed - powerful gods in the disguise of someone helpless.
Also, how to respect CLEAR AND SPECIFIC LIMITS, and the value of accepting and living within those limits, which is definitely a lesson humanity needs to learn.
Five stars! Okay, okay, I did take off stars for the narrator and feel guilty about it, since she is the series narrator, and I would probably miss her if she lost the gig... but... she just emphasizes most words way too much. Somehow it sounds to me like a backward William Shatner effect, or maybe just a female William Shatner.
Still, a great use of a credit!

Good read no purpose
I felt this could have been a novella. It just didn’t have the meat and bones of the original books to be a part of the series. I felt a bit let down and was hoping for more. These people really felt like they should have been part of a larger story told within.
The writing was good, but coming of the Meg books was a let down for me. Audiobook was performed great.

Even better than the main series
I really like The Others, but I loved this book. It takes the world building that makes The Others series great, and it adds in characters I like just as much if not more. I adored Vicki, our heroine, and the other people in this world, both human and others. The antagonists were terrible people, but I loved to hate them, and I think Bishop did a great job fleshing out villains.
As always Alexandra Harris did a great job.

Love the others but this book is lacking
I love the others series but was disappointed when the story of Meg and Simon ended I was hoping they would be in this book, but with big disappointment they had only a slight reference in one chapter. Although this book involves the others after the big fall out in book 5 the characters in this book aren’t as enjoyable to read and listen to as the original books 1 to 5 it wasn’t bad but not something I would listen or read again I would rather re listen to the audible of Meg and Simon since they are more interesting the heroine in this book was pretty boring and the storyline seemed lacking she had no backbone it was just bland

A fantastic world!
So glad I discovered this series by Anne Bishop. the characters are so interesting and the storyline keeps me coming back for more. The reader does a great job and the pace of the story is perfect.

Love love love the others!
While I miss meh and the rest of the others this book was just as good. I enjoyed all the doesn't characters in this book and hope this is not the last for miss Vicky. You will not be disappointed.

The Others are my favorite
I love everything by Anne Bishop and I love the world of the Terra Indigene!!
I liked Meg’s stories better than this one, but I thoroughly enjoyed all the new characters and this book does not disappoint.

A Nice Vacation
Really the only drawback on this book is that it has nothing to do with Lakeside. it does have a few references back too Meg and the female pack but they do not take part in this book. This is still an enjoyable listen if you liked the others.

Not as pleasing
Should have read the reviews .......This book wasn't about Meg and Simon, which was sad for me, I feel this book was more of a Novella & could stand on its own. I hope Ms Bishop goes back to the storyline we all love.

Entertaining, but..
A tale of the Others not involving the Lakeside courtyard, this book has some entertaining moments. I enjoyed the kindle version and, having experienced the narrators odd stressing and pauses, decided to download the audiobook.
This is a case of the reading detracting from the story, unfortunately. Alexandra Harris actually reads very clearly, so should be a good narrator and, despite the peculiarities noted above, performed well in the Lakeside books. But said peculiarities seem more pronounced this time, particularly when reading speech. And it's very irritating that the dominant MALE vampire sounds more womanly than his female second..
That notwithstanding, if you're an Others fan you'll enjoy the interactions and typically 'messy' come-uppances,even though the storyline is basic. Alas, no wolves - so we don't have their often hilarious, uncomprehending thoughts to enjoy.
Don't be put off immediately by this review. Listen to the sample and, unless you can't cope, give this a try. You can, after all, return it if you want. I shan't be doing that though.

disappointing
I struggled to find a store in this it was just reciting events and introducing a new set of characters. maybe the next book will be more action packed.

Good Addition to the series
A spin off from the Others books. It has none of the characters we know and love from the first four books but is set in the same world. Its a good enjoyable read but not quite the same standard as the other 4 books and I missed Simon and Meg. I liked it but got a bit frustrated at how stupid the baddies were - given all that happened in the previous books its a bit hard to believe the humans would behave in the way they did. Dont read it unless you already read the first 4
Alexandra Harris as the narratior is perfect if you are used to her in the first books

Very enjoyable
Although I missed all the usual characters, I have to say this was a very good addition to the series. It was well written as always, and it was nice to see the situation/world for new perspectives. The narrator did a good job. Her voice is clear and I like the fact that she tries to make each character sound different. Can'y wait for the next book.

Loved it
Thought after the lakeside series finished nothing would be as good. But managed to become equally enthralled by sproing's citizens
