La Repubblica Sociale Italiana, meglio conosciuta come "La Repubblica di Salò", fu la struttura statale che governò l'Italia centrosettentrionale dall'autunno del 1943 al 25 aprile del 1945. La guidò Benito Mussolini, attorniato dai gerarchi più fedeli.
Sembra che Mussolini non volesse iniziare la nuova avventura. A convincerlo furono le minacce di Hitler: l'Italia avrebbe invidiato la sorte della Polonia se il Duce non avesse guidato il nuovo stato. Così per 600 giorni, tra terrore e devastazioni, battaglie campali, azioni di partigiani e repressioni naziste, visse l'ultimo disperato tentativo di Mussolini di riprendere l'Italia ormai prossima alla liberazione.
