Jerry Burton, blessé dans le crash de son avion, s'installe pour sa convalescence avec sa sœur Joanna à Limstock, dans la campagne anglaise. Très bien accueillis par leurs nouveaux voisins, les deux jeunes gens s'adaptent vite à la vie tranquille du village. Mais des lettres d'insultes envoyées par un expéditeur anonyme et malfaisant viennent diviser l'harmonieuse communauté : le notaire, le médecin, la femme du pasteur… tout le monde y passe. Si les accusations portées sont grotesques, le doute finit néanmoins par s'insinuer dans les esprits. Il faudra toute la subtilité de Miss Marple pour empêcher Limstock de sombrer dans le chaos.
