Un tempo si insegnava nelle scuole che tutta la Mente di un individuo era compresa entro i limiti della Coscienza ordinaria, ma per molti anni questa vecchia idea è stata gradualmente superata da concezioni più avanzate. Leibnitz fu uno dei primi a portare avanti l'idea più nuova e a promulgare la dottrina che esistevano energie e attività mentali che si manifestavano su un piano della mente al di fuori del campo della coscienza ordinaria.
Dai suoi tempi gli psicologi hanno insegnato, in modo sempre più incisivo, che gran parte del nostro lavoro mentale viene svolto al di fuori del campo ordinario della coscienza. E, attualmente, l'idea di una "Coscienza Interna" è generalmente accettata tra gli psicologi.
