Rodolfo, ein gleichermaßen junger wie armer Pariser Künstler, verliebt sich am Weihnachtsabend in die schwerkranke Stickerin Mimi. Zusammen mit ihr und seinen Freunden feiert er das Weihnachtsfest in einer der unzähligen Kneipen im Pariser Künstlerviertel. Die beiden Verliebten scheinen glücklich zu sein. Ein paar Wochen später jedoch sucht Rodolfo bei seinem Freund Marcello Rat. Er hat Mimi verlassen, um ihre Krankheit durch seine Armut nicht noch zu verschlimmern. Mimi jedoch denkt nun, Rodolfo liebe sie nicht mehr. Marcello gelingt es, die beiden wieder zusammenzubringen. Allerdings nur für kurze Zeit. Denn wenig später stirbt Mimi im Kreis ihrer Freunde an ihrer schweren Lungenkrankheit.
