Ernst Hoff, der Held des Stücks, ist wie Kaiser Dramatiker und wie Kaiser wird auch er von den herrschenden Machthabern verfolgt. Aber er kann sich nicht wie sein Schöpfer ins Exil flüchten. Er muss den bitteren Weg des Verrats, der Treulosigkeit und der Verhöhnung zu Ende gehen. Als ein Geschlagener verlässt er den Schauplatz, und seine mitleidlose Umwelt hat am Schluss nur noch die unendlich banalen Worte für ihn übrig: "So einer braucht doch keinen Hut mehr."
