About this listen

King of Duels marks the passing of the torch from our beloved Andrea Parsneau to a new narrator. Erin Bennett, a Golden Voice narrator, will continue to bring the magic of The Wandering Inn to life.

The world is full of adventures, big and small.

From exploring the [Garden of Sanctuary] to the depths of the sea, there are countless fascinating discoveries to be made. Not just in the places people go, but in the things they create... or recreate from Earth. Chocolate, lifting weights, and alcohol all flow through The Wandering Inn with unexpected consequences at times.

However, there's also war, [Assassins], and scams that ruin or destroy lives. For every monster, there is an adventurer. The Stitch Witch may creep forward, and the King of Destruction continues his rampage across nations, but there will always be a champion who steps forward.

Featuring a foreword from Andrea Parsneau.

I was a little hesitant with the narrator change but Andrea Parsneau’s heartfelt message and Erin Bennetts voice acting skills and willingness to maintain character fidelity are amazing. Love these books and thankfully for the effort put forth for audio listeners.

The new narrator grew on me but why could we not just focus on fantasy? Those sections were great. The other stuff was just unnecessary.

Not as good as previous

The story was good but the new narrator made it hard to stay interested. Andrea brought energy to the characters but the new girl made it sound drab and boring.

1.2 speed does make the reader sound more like Andrea. It starts slow and I found the reader hard to focus on, but it picked up. I gather Andrea burnt out and handed over to the new reader. It's a lot of characters but there has definitely been some attempt to keep continuity in the voices, at least of races and regional accents. The reader sounds breathy. There is a lot of sibilance (hissing/lisping), which might be a recording quality issue.

I've already read ahead for this book so the content wasn't new to me but I still enjoyed it. I saw one comment that the book has agenda but I don't think so. It touches on gender/sexuality/consent, mainly in one themed section that shows a lot of different characters and places with contasting takes, which I interpret as world/character building. The orientations of certain characters are still open to interpretation at this point. I headcannoned Erin as asexual/demisexual ever since it was mentioned that she was more attracted to an online chess player she'd never seen than any of the guys she knew.

Adjusting to new narrator but gets better
