Publisher's Summary

Harry McCallion was a trained killer, fighting in the world’s trouble spots with ruthless professionalism.

Born ‘a ragged-arsed kid from the backstreets of Glasgow’, McCallion joined the Paras to escape a miserable home life and find the family he longed for. After six tense tours in Ulster, McCallion gave up everything to move to South Africa in the hope of qualifying for the highly elite South African Special Forces.

Having succeeded in joining the Recces, McCallion was involved in plots to assassinate Robert Mugabe and Joshua Nkomo. Back in Britain, McCallion once again put his body and mind through unimaginable pressure during SAS Selection and ended up back in Ulster for two tours with the SAS anti-terrorist team. Killing Zone is a story of exceptional endurance, told with grim humour and great psychological insight into the minds of those whose lives depend on killing others.

A great listen

The Troubles can be confusing for outsiders such as myself but this book shines a light on the ordinary police and soldiers who put themselves between two militant groups for decades. It is extraordinary that a superb SAS operator would become a police officer, but that says a lot about the extreme difficulties of being a police officer in Northern Ireland. It also says a lot about McCallion as a person who was doing the best he could all the time.

This book is quite a journey from poverty and desperation through to mature command and leadership fighting terrorists. His time in Africa is startling. His time in ulster as a police officer and a soldier are extraordinary. The level of sectarian hatred is palpable.

I really enjoyed this and the narration is excellently suited.

An engaging story full of action, adventure, and a lot of violence with a great Scottish accent narrating it. Highly recommended.

BS doesn’t baffle brains.

I’m not saying this guy didn’t do the things he says he did. Nor am I questioning his bravery and remarkable achievements. To become what he is from his disadvantaged childhood is admirable. I liked this book a lot until about 4 hours in when he was talking about shooting a buffalo that came running at him at 45 mph ( they only run 30-35 tops) and how he had to shoot at the animals spine - an area of 2 inches- as this is the only way to stop one. This is clearly BS. And while I realise this just a little white lie it left me doubting the integrity of the author. And for me that was enough to put me off.

Needs a proper narrator

As the headline states, I think this audiobook needs a proper narrator. I only managed one 3rd of the audiobook before returning it, I couldn’t get into the story due to narrator. The story so far as I read was good enough just a shame I couldn’t listen to this. I’ll probably buy the ebook and just read it myself.

Edit : I actually re-purchased this audiobook to finish of the story and stick by what I said.....it needs a better narrator ! The story itself was good just..no, others may enjoy the narration by the authors brother but not me. Don’t be fooled by the positive reviews, trust me I did and regretted wasting a credit on this so much I returned it.

A Tramatic Dramatic Career...

This isn't an unusual story for a young lad with limited oppurtunities who ended up in the army in the 70's, although his career was probably more colourful than most.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book a few years ago and was looking forward to the the Audible event, especially when read by the authors brother.
Unfortunately the performance has not done this book any justice. Parts that I recall laughing outloud in the book passed me by in the monotone delivery, the mispronunciation of military terms and locations were a constant distraction and evidence of the narrators lack ok knowledge.
for example its CasEvac not Case-Vac, and a place so close to any Para' Lyneham not Lyn Ham.
