About this listen

Christopher Dale Flannery received his first criminal conviction at the age of 14. Within 20 years, he would become one of the most feared criminals in Australia, believed to be responsible for up to a dozen murders, most of which he was never tried for. His crimes would create a worldwide media storm and his disappearance would go on to become criminal legend.

This is the gripping biography of an underworld assassin who associated with some of Australia's most infamous felons and became dangerously close to many of the most powerful and corrupt police operating at the time. Exposing the double-crossings, brutal gangland wars and bloody reprisals of Sydney's dark underbelly, this is the true story of Mr Rent-A-Kill as it has never been told before.

Duncan McNab is a former Sydney detective and private investigator turned journalist. His encounters with many of Flannery's associates bring a unique insider's perspective to one of the most intriguing unsolved cases of the last 30 years.

Well researched and well told. I love how Duncan has weaved a few of his own experiences of witnessing police corruption in his nsw police days. Makes it an easy read.

The story is relatively well known.
This book does give a few more new details and goes deeper into other matters.
This period in our history is a forgettable one on so many levels.
What surprised me was this narrative was delivered in an almost lighthearted playful tone which was a little annoying at times.
Overall it was worth the listen if you're into this stuff.

Interesting Delivery on a such macabre tale

The voice of Nick Mitchell really added to the story. He had an Aussie criminal grit about him.

The narrator was excellent.

If you're into Aussie True Crime, this is an excellent addition to your library. McNab details the criminal activities of Flannery and his 'known associates' with an ex-policeman's eye and a journalists curiosity, and has added some interesting colour to the various characters in that shady world. McNab's narrative is smoothly done and weaves in his personal experiences dealing with the 'best police money can buy', adding to the bigger picture of things. The narrator, Nick Mitchell, has done a great job and captured McNab's own tone (if you've seen him in interviews you'll spot this) and made this such an easy 'read', I unintentionally finished it in one day.
