Always a great twist with Simon Kernick and this book waits until the final few minutes. Enjoyed this very much.

Where Kernick Gets It Wrong

I had to listen twice to this one - I became so disinterested first time around I gave up concentrating. Second time around I remained disinterested but this time it made me realise why I no longer appreciated Kernick. He's clearly a skilled author and has found a niche in 'fast paced' thrillers. But the downside to this is that none of his characters are likeable or people I can identify with. It's the same reason I find Agatha Christie so unattractive - I want at least want one character I can root for or who can inspire me. And again - like Christie - he seems far too obsessed with plot twists and surprises. The narrative therefore is jumping around so much that it becomes impossible to settle into the story line. As a contrast - try Michael Connelly. Any of his main characters are well drawn, believable and people who interest and inspire. His pacing and plotting is second to none. So I'm sorry to say this but until I get to a point where there are no more authors like Connelly - this is my last Kernick.

Uncertain.

I love Simon Kernicks books and having read just about every one he's written but this one i just don't know. The plot was Ok but i felt it could have been told in a much shorter book, even Paul Thornley who i think is teh best narrator ever seemed to struggle reading it. Worth reading but not Simons best. I do look forward to his next one though! Smiles:

Not the usual pace but still great,

Oh my word I love Simon's books (I think they appeal to my strong sense of justice and for the most part the bad guys have an uppance got!) and this one is no different, although I would say that the pace is a little slower and you have a little more time to catch your breath prior to someone turning up dead !. It's a twisty-turner alright with a trust no-one narrative that you come to expect from Simon and I have always loved the ordinary guy thrown into extraordinary circumstances and an unfolding nightmare. Recommended in a heart beat just not a heart pound !

Not one of his best I'm sad to say!

I am shocked to say that this is the first of Simon Kernick's books that I've not enjoyed. I struggled to finish it, if I'm honest. He usually writes, foot to the floor, hang on to your hat...this was more 'Driving Miss Daisy' Time to look for a new favourite author?

Sub-Standard Kernick

Always been a fan of this author but I found this book to be rather dull. The only reason I kept listening was down to Paul Thornley’s excellent narration and I was hoping for a spectacular ending. However, none of the characters were in the least bit interesting or likeable and the story plodded along to a damp squib conclusion.
Here’s to hoping Simon Kernick is back on form in his next book.

Have heard before sadly

Sadly disappointed with this one. Having listened to many of Simons other books I had high hopes for this one, yet the first half of it had the feel of copy and paste from his earlier novels. It did pick up second half but when compared to others it’s like he’s rang this one in

Not his greatest

I’ve listened to or read all the Simon Kernick books (I think). This is far from his finest and at times I thought of giving up. I’ll get his next book but had this been the first book of his that I’d heard I doubt I’d have bothered with a second.

Paul Thornley’s narration is, in my opinion, excellent - as always.

Intriguing

This stand alone thriller from Simon Kernick is intriguing. Narrated by (the excellent) Paul Thornley, the story is told by several different characters - each with their own 'version of events to suit their own agenda'. The author takes you on a journey with many twists and turns, never quite knowing who or what to believe and keeps you guessing from beginning to end. Having read pretty much everything that Simon has written I was eagerly anticipating 'Kill A Stranger' and once again I did not finish this book feeling disappointed. Great stuff.
