Trübsinnig liegt der kleine Eisbär Pelle in seiner Schneehöhle. Zu nichts hat er Lust. Das weise Walross rät Pelles Papa, einen Singvogel aus dem Süden zu holen. "Kein Problem", meint Papa Eisbär. Zwar kennt er sich mit Vögeln (und dem Süden) nicht besonders gut aus, dennoch macht er sich entschlossen auf den Weg.
Er reist nach Island, Afrika und sogar bis zum Südpol und trifft dabei auf zahlreiche Tiere - doch ein richtiger Singvogel ist nicht dabei. Schließlich begegnet er dem Waisenmädchen Pinguine. Sie kann zwar nur fiepen, aber Papa Eisbär will es trotzdem mit ihr versuchen. Zurück am Nordpol ist Pinguines mangelndes Singvermögen gar kein Problem, denn was Pelle gefehlt hat, war kein Vogel, der singt, sondern eine Freundin, mit der er spielen kann.
