Publisher's Summary

An insightful, candid, and inspiring memoir from Karamo Brown - Queer Eye’s beloved culture expert - as he shares his story for the first time, exploring how the challenges in his own life have allowed him to forever transform the lives of those in need.

When Karamo Brown first auditioned for the casting directors of Netflix’s Queer Eye, he knew he wouldn’t win the role of culture expert by discussing art and theatre. Instead he decided to redefine what 'culture' could - and should - mean for the show. He took a risk and declared, 'I am culture'.

Karamo believes that culture is so much more than art museums and the ballet - it’s how people feel about themselves and others, how they relate to the world around them, and how their shared labels, burdens, and experiences affect their daily lives in ways both subtle and profound. Seen through this lens, Karamo is culture: his family is Jamaican and Cuban; he was raised in the American South in predominantly white neighbourhoods and attended an HBCU (historically black college/university); he was trained as a social worker and psychotherapist; he overcame personal issues of colourism, physical and emotional abuse, alcohol and drug addiction, and public infamy; he is a proud and dedicated gay single father of two boys, one biological and the other adopted.

It is by discussing deep subjects like these, he feels, that the makeovers on the show can attain their full, lasting meaning. Styling your hair and getting new clothes and furniture are important, but it’s also important that you work out why you haven’t done so in 20 years - doing that can truly change your life.

In this eye-opening and moving memoir, Karamo reflects on his lifelong education. It comprises every adversity he has overcome as well as the lessons he has learned along the way. It is only by exploring our difficulties and having the hard conversations - with ourselves and one another - that we are able to adjust our mind-sets, heal emotionally and move forward to live our best lives.

Karamo shows us the way.

An insight I never knew

I loved hearing Karamo's story. He presents himself so well and seems to have his life together. However after listening to this book I got to know a Karamo I never would have thought existed. He's worked hard and his storytelling and performance in the audio version is very well done. Definitely recommend a listen.

Disappointingly repetitive.

I love Karamo and his many projects, however this book was too repetitive and lacked a deeper look into his life. Throughout the book he goes over the same things in a way that leaves much to be desired. It was unfortunate as I was looking forward to this book. Just one man's opinion though, I'd say listen to it for yourself and make your own judgement.

Inspiring "warts and all" memoir

Parts of Karamo's story are shocking but his choice to put it out there "warts and all" makes it all the more authentic and inspiring. Love your work, Karamo - can't wait to see what else is in store for you!

What an honest insightful story of Karamo’s life so far.

I picked this audiobook because I love watching Queer Eye with my two girls. I love the diversity of the show and also instilling in my children that they can be whoever they want to be in this life and I’ll be proud of them. This book exceeded all my expectations. Doesn’t matter how bad your past life was, how much you feel you got wrong - there is ALWAYS time and reason to turn things around. If anyone is having a hard time in life, found themselves on the wrong path, this book is for you. It will leave you feeling you can achieve anything you put your mind towards. Karamo Brown, thank you so much for your honesty, openness and just for being you.

Wouldn't have expected more from Karamo

Love it. Loved Karamo from the beginning of Queer Eye. How he explains his story from being a child to an adult in the media shows what kind of person he is. Selfless and fundamentally good. He speaks of his past with fondness but also remorse, candor and genuine understanding. Brilliant.

Honest and heartfelt

I appreciated Karamo for his honest account of his life, there was some things that he wasn’t proud of but he goes to show the readers how any one is able to turn their lives around. He talks about some of the difficulties people face in life but at the end of each chapter puts a positive spin on things, I felt it was a very uplifting book. I would recommend to anyone!

A propaganda campaign for a talk show

I’ll never view Karamo in the same way. Interesting, thought provoking story which changed the way I viewed the author and his work (not for the better). Feels like there’s an agenda for every story and the way it is told. Love his message though and it was a great story to listen to.
