Der Wandel der Zeit zwischen Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs und DDR-Zeit, betrachtet anhand zweier Charaktere: Der 1903 geborene Ludwig Kaltenburg ist Biologe in Posen. In den 1930ern begegnet er dem Ich-Erzähler zum ersten Mal, der zu der Zeit noch ein Kind ist. Später, nach dem Zusammenbruch des "Dritten Reiches", treffen sich beide wieder in Dresden. Der Ich-Erzähler hat seine Eltern während der Bombardierung Dresdens verloren und studiert inzwischen Ornithologie. Die beiden Forscher verbindet schon bald internationale Anerkennung.
