Publisher's Summary

The story of a life built on sand. In the rain.

In this compelling memoir, comedian and actor Alan Davies recalls his boyhood with vivid insight and devastating humour. Shifting between his 1970s upbringing and his life today, Davies moves poignantly from innocence to experience to the clarity of hindsight, always with a keen sense of the absurd.

From sibling dynamics, to his voiceless, misunderstood progression through school, sexuality and humiliating 'accidents', Davies inhabits his younger mind with spectacular accuracy, sharply evoking an era when Green Shield Stamps, Bob-a-Job week and Whizzer & Chips loomed large, a bus fare was 2p - and children had little power in the face of adult motivation. Here, there are often exquisitely tender recollections of the mother he lost at six years old, of a bereaved family struggling to find its way, and the kicks and confusion of adolescence.

Through even the joyous and innocent memories, the pain of Davies' lifelong grief and profound betrayal is unfiltered, searing and beautifully articulated. Just Ignore Him is not only an autobiography, it is a testament to a survivor's resilience and courage.

A must read (listen) book

this was gruelling, heartbreaking and eye-opening.
the abuse and alienation is a central theme of the book but also offers an insight into the complexities of abuse, especially by someone so close.
i wanted to stop reading and couldn't stop reading.

despite the author being a comedian, there are few, if any, light-hearted moments in it, so brace yourself

Best non-fiction I've ever read/top ten books ever

The most amazingly moving book with brutal honesty. Pacing myself was listening to it over 3 days. 5 stars are not enough to express how much you should read this book.

Not what I expected, incredibly brave and generous

First thoughts, I hope only those with sensitivity listen. Brutally honest and raw. Thanks Alan

Honest and heartbreaking read

Alan Davies narrating his own memoir is a far cry from the larrikin we see on television. His abuse as a child, fragmented family, and critical view of himself is not an easy thing to hear, let alone to have written. Davies writing has comic moments, but it doesn't detract from the seriousness of his story.

A very brave narrative Alan.

I was not expecting the book to be as it is. The story of Alan's life from the time his mother died when he was six to mid teens. The story of a boy who survived the abuse of his father, the disdain of his siblings and others around him and the total lack of care most adults showed him. An honest, confronting and brave story by a man who I admire even more now I know what he has been through and still turned out a caring thoroughly decent human being.

AN INCREDIBLELY RAW STORY OF A SURVIVOR

This is not a funny book by any means. It talks about a boy's experiences of being molested by his father and a long journey, as a grown man, to get justice; as much as possible in the circumstances. It's painfully truthful and a good guide for any other survivors out there who have been contemplating holding their abusers to account.

So moving

I was transfixed listening to this beautiful book - absolutely heartbreaking and moving but also made me laugh. So well written and I think audible version added so much. I did buy the book too as wanted to support Alan. Loved it x
