Story
Just before her 40th birthday, Gail Francis quit her perfectly good job and set out to hike one of the great trails of the world. Carrying everything she needed on her back, Francis spent five months walking from Mexico to Canada along the Pacific Crest Trail. Along the way, she lost her pack scrambling over scree in the desert, struggled to navigate high mountain passes, and wore the soles off her boots trekking across lava fields - all within some of the most pristine wilderness in the nation. Though she set out alone, her story includes an eclectic cast of characters.

Story
Christine discovered long distance backpacking while surfing the internet at work. She decided that day to attempt to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail. One adventure led to another and a few years later she set out on the Wonderland Trail in Mt Rainier National Park. Her Rugged Outdoors Woman persona started as a joke, a nod to the outdoor adventurer that she wished to be. But in the years since, she has come into her own as a backpacker, rock climber, and trail runner. This book is a testament to the decision to name who you want to be and make it so.

The real stories behind the scenery of America’s national parks. For 12 years, Andrea Lankford lived in the biggest, most impressive national parks in the world, working a job she loved. She chaperoned baby sea turtles on their journey to sea. She pursued bad guys on her galloping patrol horse. She jumped into rescue helicopters bound for the heart of the Grand Canyon. She won arguments with bears. She slept with a few too many rattlesnakes. Hell yeah, it was the best job in the world! Fortunately, Andrea survived it.

Publisher's Summary
In Journeys North, legendary trail angel, thru hiker, and former PCTA board member Barney Scout Mann spins a compelling tale of six hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail in 2007 as they walk from Mexico to Canada. This ensemble story unfolds as these half-dozen hikers - including Barney and his wife, Sandy - trod north, slowly forming relationships and revealing their deepest secrets and aspirations. They face a once-in-a-generation drought and early severe winter storms that test their will in this bare-knuckled adventure. In fact, only a third of all the hikers who set out on the trail that year would finish.
As the group approaches Canada, a storm rages. How will these very different hikers, ranging in age, gender, and background, respond to the hardship and suffering ahead of them? Can they all make the final 60-mile push through freezing temperatures, sleet, and snow, or will some reach their breaking point?
Journeys North is a story of grit, compassion, and the relationships people forge when they strive toward a common goal.

An Inspiring Listen
Good story, with a large cast of characters. Many are bit characters and a little difficult to keep track of. But the handful of central characters are engaging.
The narrator is a little stiff, a little formal, but it's not seriously off-putting.
It IS inspiring though, and had this old guy thinking of a baby step trail hike here in New Zealand.
I would have liked some more details of gear, etc.
Overall, I'd recommend it. it's well worth your to time.

Great listen
I really enjoyed this and as a fellow hiker, I really connected with this book. At times I was smiling broadly and at others I had a big lump in my throat. Thank you, Scout, I loved it and yes, people are fundamentally good!

Gruelling trek
Really enjoyed this yarn about the PCT, and like the AT, made me want to walk it too.
The descriptions of the hikers, their gear and choices, the landscapes and situations were very interesting and enjoyable and had me feeling like I was there with them.
Anyone who likes a good yarn, and lives hiking and the outdoors, like I do will enjoy this one. Enjoy ;-D

Confused by swapping trail and normal name
It felt creepy that the writer was the mouthpiece of a young woman. Would’ve been better to report what they had said to him rather than weirdly pretending to be them in what is a Non fiction book. Confused by him using nontrail names. Yes a confusing narrative of an incredible achievement

overall a good book
I struggled to get into this at first, and like others have reviewed found the swapping between trail Nicknames and people's actual names a little confusing to keep track of at times. I'm glad I stuck with it though as I found the story enjoyable and it certainly had me dreaming of one-day doing a similar hike myself. I enjoyed that the story went into personal tales and experiences as without these it would have been hard to relate to some of the characters. a wonderful achievement for all

Inspiring
when I started this book it was after reading so many others about through hiking. I had left this to last thinking the others sounded better, however this ended up being my favourite. The narrator was perfect, the stories kept you intrigued and made you feel as though you were part of the journey with them, and it was heartfelt.
Definitely recommend 👌
