Story
Laurie Zaleski never aspired to run an animal rescue; that was her mother Annie’s dream. But from girlhood, Laurie was determined to make the dream come true. Thirty years later as a successful businesswoman, she did it, buying a 15-acre farm deep in the Pinelands of South Jersey. She was planning to relocate Annie and her caravan of ragtag rescues - horses and goats, dogs and cats, chickens and pigs - when Annie died, just two weeks before moving day. In her heartbreak, Laurie resolved to make her mother’s dream her own.

Story
In 1954, 63-year-old Maine farmer Annie Wilkins embarked on an impossible journey. She had no money and no family, she had just lost her farm, and her doctor had given her only two years to live. But Annie wanted to see the Pacific Ocean before she died. She ignored her doctor’s advice to move into the county charity home. Instead, she bought a cast-off brown gelding named Tarzan, donned men’s dungarees, and headed south in mid-November, hoping to beat the snow.

Publisher's Summary
Joe, an ugly and unloved horse, trusts no one, and no one trusts him. Until Vicky. This is the story of a troubled horse and the little girl who loves him.
Based on the true adventures of the author's childhood 50 years ago, Joe teaches the lesson that sometimes beauty is not skin deep but heart deep. That the unloved have much to show us about the true nature of love.

Horses and friendships
I wanted to like this book far more than I did. At first the little girl who befriended a horse was charming and descriptions of being a child 50 years ago and the constant reminder that the author's mother practiced benign neglect got old and ugly. The comments of her wanting to fight and scratch her sister also got old. After 50 years can't we accept that this was long ago?
The author acknowledged she changed names and blended personalities to prevent anyone learning the identity of the characters. Then why all the petty name calling of the buck toothed girl who had the best horse and the boy she thought was impressive? If the final point of this book is the be mindfully aware of the Serenity Prayer, then 50 years is enough time to know the difference between the things we can change and the things we can not.
If the book had said things like 'I hated my sister, she was always mean to me. At least this is what I thought as an immature 9 year old' and continued with the feelings described as being rude, hurtful, selfish and jealous as young children are apt to be then I would have enjoyed the book more. I can't swallow the 'God wants us to be righteous' then calling someone horse head or mastodon tooth. The two behaviors don't mesh with me.
Well performed. I'm not looking for another book by this author.

Unexpected
I am horse lover. I went by the title of horse trainer for 20+ years and fell in love with every horse I worked with, at least a little bit. This book is outstanding both the writing and the performance are exceptional. I was not raised around horses and remember my 5 mile walk to be around them. The writer's experiences are easy for me to relate to but the words that she uses to paint her experience with would make this a great book for anyone. I laughed, I cried, and I remembered.

Wonderful heartfelt story
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I loved this story, its the story of hope and courage not only for Joe but for the heroine Vicky. Wonderful family story, a story for all ages....This is a book that should be a movie!!
Who was your favorite character and why?
Vicky, as shy young young girl, felt like a misfit. She overcomes thru perseverance and never giving up on herself!...and all though she may not describe it that way...that is exactly what she did.
What does Dorothy Deavers bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
her voice is so soothing and she reads with slight emotion that adds a nice quality
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Don't consider myself religious in the least bit, but before her first horse show (on a particular horse) reading the inscription on "goldie" and breaking down the words and really applying them to the moment was very touching. As a horse lover and owner and always trying to "make the connection" this passage really applies in so many ways to horses, because its a partnership and you both have baggage..

What about Dorothy Deavers’s performance did you like?
She did a great job!

Interesting Story
The story was good but it was the performance that made this so special. I thought it was the author herself that read the book because she read it with exactly the correct emotion. I would definitely recommend it.
