Oblíbený hrdina Oldřich z Chlumu, zástupce krále Přemysla II. Otakara a správce hradu Bezděz, tentokrát odjíždí z pověření svého panovníka na hrad Vartemberk. Mají se zde konat slavnostní zásnuby rytíře Beneše z Dubé a krásné Ludmily z Vartemberka, jimiž má být potvrzen mír mezi znepřátelenými šlechtickými rody. Během cesty narazí Oldřich na mrtvolu kupce, kterého přepadli a oloupili. Po stopách lupičů pošle svého panoše Otu, ale vrahům se podaří uniknout.
