TWO CRIME FAMILIES, ONE SOURCE OF POWER: JADE.

Jade is the lifeblood of the city of Janloon - a stone that enhances a warrior's natural strength and speed. Jade is mined, traded, stolen and killed for, controlled by the ruthless No Peak and Mountain families.
When a modern drug emerges that allows anyone - even foreigners - to wield jade, simmering tension between the two families erupts into open violence. The outcome of this clan war will determine the fate of all in the families, from their grandest patriarch to even the lowliest runner on the streets.

Jade City is an epic tale of blood, family, honour, and of those who live and die by ancient laws in a changing world.©2017 Fonda Lee

Critic Reviews

Stylish and action-packed, full of ambitious families and guilt-ridden loves, Jade City is an epic drama reminiscent of the best classic Hong Kong gangster films but takes place in a fantasy metropolis so gritty and well imagined that you'll forget you're reading a book (Ken Liu, winner of the Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy Awards and author of The Grace of Kings and The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories)

Well paced, great worldbuilding, interesting characters and a gripping plot. The characters aren’t the most out there or original but they are well written and very believable. The story is about family, honour, and moral questions. The magic system is cool to read but is more scientific than magic.

Very unique

This has been showing up across socials so gave it a go, unfortunately whilst the lore and the world building is great, drawing cool comparisons between cultures and fantasy, the story was built to be epic but lacked the impact and depth the narrative build seemed to promise. Performance was very flat compared to many novels as well which likely could have made this worse than the book was. Shame!

Well recommended, but

An enjoyable read even if it was hard to really attach to any of the characters, not at the fault of the reader as he portrayed each character brilliantly, more at the distance given by the author to observe the characters within their surroundings. It is a wonderful cross between Ninja Mythos and The Godfather, with Jade being the central force that gives power to the 'green bone' fighters.
Besides remarkable storytelling and perfectly crafted action scenes, I did feel a little hampered down but the heavy masculine presence and that strong female characters were few and far between.

Asian inspired fantasy with a Mafia twist

Loved this urban fantasy that draws on Chinese/Asian cultures well and makes it accessible to those who are unfamiliar with these cultures. Loved the characters and their journeys. Can’t wait to listen to the next one.

Great change of culture
