Publisher's Summary

Stolen from his mother and placed into institutional care when he was only a few months old, Uncle Jack was raised under the government's White Australia Policy. The loneliness and isolation he experienced during those years had a devastating impact on him that endured long after he reconnected with his Aboriginal roots and discovered his stolen identity. Even today he feels like an outsider, a loner, a fringe dweller.

In this honest and no-holds-barred memoir, Uncle Jack reveals the 'ups and downs of this crazy, drugged up, locked up, fucked up, and at times unbelievable life'. From his sideline as a cat burglar, battles with drug addiction and stints in prison to gracing the nation's stages and screens as he dazzled audiences with his big personality and acting prowess, he takes us through the most formative moments of his life.

By turns heartbreaking and hilarious, Jack Charles: Born-Again Blakfella is a candid and uplifting memoir from one of Australia's finest and most beloved actors.

Awesome Experience Awesome Man

The way Jack has constructed the story of his life with his older Jack often explaining to us and the younger Jack the reality behind our ignorance while we wade through life. I could relate so well to his story, having spent 4 years in a catholic boarding school. He explains the regime of life in such institutions ever so well. To have him narrate it to me personally was a fantastic experience. Love you Jack.

Absolutely wonderful - Uncle Jack is a treasure

A joyful telling of a painful past, told in Uncle Jack's beautiful voice. A poignant story of discrimination, racism and resilience. Highly enjoyed this book and highly recommend.

Absolutely Awesome

Thank you Uncle for talking us through your life's journey. An intriguing insight into a journey from a wandering boy not knowing who he was in a world which tried to deny him culture and his mob. Highly recommended.

Amazing!

Jack Charles is an example of an incredible human being. His honesty and his willingness to share the details of his life is refreshing and I didn't want this book to end. Sadly, Uncle Jack passed away just after i’d finished his book but I'm a better person for reading his story.

Uncle Jack’s life

I thoroughly enjoyed this book once I finished it. He was a naughty boy but never hurt anyone. He had so many second chances in life, a lot that others would not have had. In the end he turned out alright.

What a huge life journey

Uncle Jack tells his own story in an always entertaining yarn. Sometimes I was laughing out loud, sometimes I was gripped by the adventures of his exploits, sometimes I was saddened, sometimes filled with righteous anger, but his storytelling kept me gripped from start to finish. What a life. Respect.
