Publisher's Summary

Stolen from his mother and placed into institutional care when he was only a few months old, Uncle Jack was raised under the government's White Australia Policy. The loneliness and isolation he experienced during those years had a devastating impact on him that endured long after he reconnected with his Aboriginal roots and discovered his stolen identity. Even today he feels like an outsider, a loner, a fringe dweller.

In this honest and no-holds-barred memoir, Uncle Jack reveals the 'ups and downs of this crazy, drugged up, locked up, fucked up, and at times unbelievable life'. From his sideline as a cat burglar, battles with drug addiction and stints in prison to gracing the nation's stages and screens as he dazzled audiences with his big personality and acting prowess, he takes us through the most formative moments of his life.

By turns heartbreaking and hilarious, Jack Charles: Born-Again Blakfella is a candid and uplifting memoir from one of Australia's finest and most beloved actors.

The Voice!

I'd be happy to listen to Jack ready to me all day every day. That voice is good medicine. Holy crap - what a story! Absolutely heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time. I drive to remote NSW regularly for work and listen to audio books en route. Its fucken dangerous driving while your weeping for Jack and all those other innocent children who suffered as he did at the hands of those tasked with supposedly caring for you. But it's not all sad; some of his tales are hilarious and incredible. I'm not one for repeats but bloody hell, this is an exception. An absolute pleasure.

Jack Charles is an amazing man. Amongst his many talents he is also an amazing story teller. So Born Again Blackfulla is the perfect convergence of his life and personality.

Awesome Experience Awesome Man

The way Jack has constructed the story of his life with his older Jack often explaining to us and the younger Jack the reality behind our ignorance while we wade through life. I could relate so well to his story, having spent 4 years in a catholic boarding school. He explains the regime of life in such institutions ever so well. To have him narrate it to me personally was a fantastic experience. Love you Jack.

Wonderful story

I feel very lucky to have been able to listen to Jack himself tell the story of his life. I will hope that more Aboriginal people from the ‘stolen generation’ will share their stories in a bid to help others actually see what these people went through and to see how such atrocities can impact on society as a whole for years to come. Thanks Jack! You’re a true legend :-)

Loved Jack's charm

Jack Charles doesn't beat around the bush. His story is confronting, raw and beautifully honest.
Charles has, mostly, dodged the curveballs thrown his way making this an uplifting story with a very honest message for its readers.
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Charles reminisce as he read the words he'd put down on paper - a chuckle here, a stern word there.
This was a charming read which I thoroughly recommend.

A Life Well Lived.

What a great yarn; told with absolute honesty and humility.
I love this bloke. If he isn’t already, then he should be listed as a National Treasure.

A hard life told with love and humour

It was like having Jack Charles in my lounge room telling me his story. Jack's life is full of hardships and he tells it in an honest and engaging way. Possibly my favourite book so far for 2019.
