Publisher's Summary

The anticipated memoir from a sports entertainment fandom legend.

As a kid growing up in New York in the late '50s, Bill Apter fell in love with professional wrestling, and it wasn't long before he was rubbing shoulders with the greats as a young reporter and photographer. He's since become the world's best-known wrestling magazine personality, and he's had professional and personal relationships with a who's who of the business, like Triple H, Hulk Hogan, The Rock, Sting, and Ric Flair.

In his fun-loving memoir, Bill Apter takes us from the dressing rooms of the Bruno Sammartino era and the last days of the territories to the birth of WrestleMania, the emergence of "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, and the "Attitude Era" to today's WWE Superstars like John Cena, Daniel Bryan, and Roman Reigns. He also shares stories of his days photographing boxing stars like Muhammad Ali and other champions, and he documents his appearances on the WWE Network and his work as editor of 1wrestling.com.

Find out which wrestler threatened him, learn about the dead wrestler who was really alive, and discover how hanging out with Andy Kaufman led to the comic's notorious feud with Jerry "The King" Lawler. Still intimately involved in the wrestling business, the award-winning Apter has a story on everybody.

It was ok

If your looking for a book of stories about old school wrestling tales.... This book isn't it..... In all fairness to Mr. Apter I just finished Jim Ross's book that was much more enjoyable.

I am certain there is an audience out there somewhere...

?..besides those hundreds "named therein" but to those who have an interest in the dynamics of professional entertainment wrestling, this book WIDELY misses the mark.

A must for wrestling fans

Did you know that without Bill Apter that Silverster Stallone would have never found Hulk Hogan for Rocky (and thus never have fallen on Vince McMahon's radar), or that he introduced Andy Kaufman to the world of wrestling? This fantastic book has a number of well structured and interesting stories from a key wrestling insider covering many decades, and told with class and humility. A must read for all wrestling fans! :)

One Of The Best

I recently listened to the audiobook Is Wrestling Fixed? I Didn't Know It Was Broken! by Bill Apter. This Audible Original was highly enjoyable for a variety of reasons. First, Bill narrates the book himself, making it infinitely more charming and compelling. Second, I grew up watching professional wrestling (and still do) and I fondly recall buying many of the magazines Bill was affiliated with, including Pro Wrestling Illustrated, The Wrestler, and Inside Wrestling. Prior to the internet, these magazines were the best way to see amazing photos and read articles about my favorite professional wrestlers, and this was during the 1990s when the WWF (now WWE), WCW, and ECW were hotter than ever. It was a magical time to be a fan and this book captures that era, and many others, from Bill's perspective.

It was fascinating learning about the various jobs he's held throughout his diverse and lengthy career, and him and I connected via email because I discovered by reading this book that we both love Barry Manilow's music. My favorite parts of the book were the countless stories peppered throughout about the friendships and memorable encounters Bill has had over the years with professional wrestling icons and celebrities. As his narration makes clear, he's immensely grateful for the life he's led and all of the opportunities along the way. This audiobook is a great way for fans of professional wrestling to get an insider's point-of-view of what it's like being behind the camera, microphone or pen of Bill Apter. I highly recommend it.

If you are a wrestling fan, this is a must read.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. The stories told by Bill Apter are captivating and as a wrestling fan, this audiobook hooked me from chapter one. I've already been telling friends and family who are wrestling fans that they will come away with an unbelievable respect for Bill and the business as a whole.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Is Wrestling Fixed??

The most memorable parts of this book are the stories about Curt Hennig, Taz and of course Jerry Lawler and Andy Kaufman; which I watched play out on television when I was 5 or 6 years old.

What does Bill Apter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I recently chatted live with Bill for the first time on YouTube. When I asked about the audio version, he addressed me personally and told when I listen to it, pretend he is in the room with me, telling me the stories. I did just that and it made the experience of hearing him in his own voice tell these amazing stories even more special.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I wanted to, but I bought it late at night. I've sat up late into the night on a couple of occasions listening to this wonderful audiobook.

Any additional comments?

To a certain degree, I feel like I truly know Bill Apter. My respect for Bill increased even more when I heard him talk about helping people with disabilities find work. I am severely visually impaired and recently lost my job of 9+ years as an office worker, so I understand how important that kind of work is. It hits home with me. I would love to one day meet Bill and have drinks, Orange Fanta of course. Why Orange Fanta? If you don't know, read the book and find out. Thank you Bill. Listening to your book was an absolute joy.

Boring and poorly narrated

The stories aren’t very interesting and their is no order to the chapters so reads quite chaotically.

The narrator is terrible. He repeats himself, leaves long spaces in his speech and laughs at things he’s said like its the first time he’s reading the book.

All in all very disappointing.
