Critic Reviews

'The story of Iris had to be told, and Fiona Kelly McGregor has produced the roughest but most invaluable diamond.' Tony Birch

'There's a magical conjuring up here, a dream-building of people, place and things. Iris is to me not just a great urban novel, but maybe the best Australian city novel ever.' Peter Doyle

'Visceral and immediate and relevant. It's a stunner.' Hannah Kent

Very engrossing story

This incredible story held my interest from beginning to end. Loved hearing about the iconic landmarks of Sydney back in the day. Exhaustive research brings this story to life as you share the day to day lives of Sydney women during the 30s, and 40s.

Brilliant

For lovers of different perspectives on history. Written well, made me feel as though I too was walking the streets of Surry Hills on the watch for George: love it!

Redolent of atmosphere

Sometimes hard to keep track of the various protagonists. Evokes the era and setting adeptly.

Fantastic!

For anyone that lives or has lived in Sydney the reference to familiar landmarks and street names makes this historic novel very appealing.
Thought the narration was excellent and would highly recommend, if you want to be transported back to the 1930s of Sydney’s criminal underbelly.

Not a great book

Iris and her story appealed to me, so I wanted to like this, but it was not a great book. I gave up early in the piece.
