About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

The Sunday Times best seller, previously published as Murder Games, now a hit TV series starring Alan Cumming.

Dr Dylan Reinhart is an expert on criminal behaviour. But when his best-selling book is found at a gruesome murder scene, Dylan comes face to face with the real world of crime.

And the killer is expecting him.

Elizabeth Needham, the brilliant NYPD detective leading the case, recruits Dylan to help investigate another clue the killer has left behind - a playing card. Is this the killer's signature? Or will the cards lead them to the next victim, and right into the Dealer's hands?

The Dealer's twisted game will test everything Dylan thought he knew about the criminal mind.

Can Dylan put a stop to the killer before he deals his final card?

Critic Reviews

"Not many writers can smash out blockbuster books back-to-back, but one name is leaps and bounds ahead in the juggernaut literature stakes: James Patterson. Known for his lightning-fast plots, cliff-hanger chapters and encyclopaedic crime scene knowledge, James has created the foundations for an unforgettable new drama series." (Mail Online)

Kudos to James Patterson and Howard Roughan for collaborating on a very different type of action / thriller series to Patterson’s usual books. Professor of Criminal Psychology at Yale, Dr Dylan Reinhart is brilliant and arrogant. When his book and a playing card are found at a murder scene, he teams up with NYPD Detective Elizabeth Needham to catch a serial killer who is leaving clues about each new victim. Reinhart is not your typical salt-of-the-earth law-and-order patriot. He was hard to love at first, but there’s more to him than meets the eye and he grew on me a lot over the story. While the action and body count were still high, I enjoyed the more cerebral tone. Actor Edoardo Ballerini was such a great choice to narrate, his high-handed manner perfectly suited Reinhart’s character!

A different kind of Patterson hero!

Still struggling to finish this book. The narrator is annoying with inflections all over the place. Not sure why he chose this voice. if he's trying to depict a gay guy...FAIL!!!
I could not follow the story, Not sure if it was the annoying reader or the confusing storyline. Don't think I'll give it another go. And will make sure to avoid other books read by this narrator.

Very poorly read. Far from the best of Patterson.

I just love James Patterson books and I was not disappointed by Instinct! I enjoyed how sassy the main character is! I ctually thought the book had finished then realised there was half an hour left, just enough time to add in a big twist!

Patterson can do no wrong
