In his autobiography, Robert Derby describes his journey of acceptance of himself as a gay man. Robert suffered gender-identity confusion from an early age, compounded by a misogynistic, sadistic father and a depressed, religious mother who thought he would be better off dead than be himself. He witnessed the harmful consequences of religion and lived through persecution and humiliation while serving in the military from the sodomy laws in the United States in the 1960s.
