 Im Jahr 2001 legte die amerikanische Entwicklungspsychologin Emmy Werner eine bemerkenswerte Langzeitstudie vor. Aus ihr ging hervor, dass es offenbar Menschen gibt, die über eine besondere psychische Widerstandskraft verfügen. Obwohl sie als Kind vernachlässigt oder misshandelt wurden und in Armut aufwuchsen, hatten sie sich zu gesunden und erfolgreichen Erwachsenen entwickelt. Woher diese Widerstandskraft kommt ist Gegenstand der Resilienzforschung. Lange Zeit stand hier das Individuum im Mittelpunkt. Jetzt wenden sich die Wissenschaftler der Widerstandskraft von Kulturen und Systemen zu. Auch hier sind einige krisenfester als andere. Woran liegt das? Und wie kann man die Resilienz eines Systems erhöhen, um z. B. für die Folgen des Klimawandels gewappnet zu sein?
