Publisher's Summary

Invasions and sabotage. Two civilizations doing anything to exist. War crimes are the norm.

Joe takes his first step into exile, and is promptly unable to breathe. This new Zone has a higher concentration of power, magnitudes denser. His first task is to survive, but mere survival is the least of his concerns.

The Zone he has landed on has been in a state of constant war for thousands of years, a tug of war between the Elven and Dwarven societies. Not choosing a side is the same as declaring both to be your personal enemy. Though he is resistant, Joe reluctantly decides to go with the group he thinks will help him grow the most - and is instantly plunged into their bitter war. To gain the freedom he desires, Joe needs to turn to the less savory aspects of his class.

Engulfed by darkness, Joe can only hope he’ll be able to snuff out the light.

A bit lacking in agency otherwise great.

That alchemy building is destined to be razed as like that smelly warehouse he will proberbly make a base underneath the capital where the trash is. Joe can keep making low quality jars the absorb all the trash essences from the surrounding trash and keep making more with the trash essences and use the low quality cores he gets from koreify. This will eventually make a zone perfect for crafting as there would be no trash essences in the surroundings to worsen the final product. This exponential growth possibility has already been pointed out as it would only take 2 weeks to get a return on investment.

Main character appears Flanderised

It feels like a big dip in story compared to the previous books. The main character appears to completely forget what skills he has and how to use them. Very frustrating at times.

Great Series

A bit of a change up from the rest of the series however it is still a great book. Narrator is amazing and love the bloopers at the end. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Sorry - this one was really hard work

I could (just) handle the Towny McTownface in the last book, and have enjoyed listening to Luke Daniels before - but this one just about did the series in for me. I REALLY struggled to finish, and kept hoping it would get at least a little less ridiculous, but sadly it didn't happen - it just got worse and worse. And the never-ending really painful 'puns' didn't help at all. If you want a complete spoof of a story, this might be for you. But definitely not for me. I will try the next but if it's more of the same, I won't be continuing.

eh, losing it's magic

I started reading this series after reading the Murderhobo books (by the same author) and enjoying them a lot, and while the first 2 were pretty enjoyable I've since found that this series is difficult to stay invested in.

Joe's original party were interesting characters, his second party seemed... like it was trying too hard to be unique, and he spend most of this book without a party thus having more of a focus on him and I have to say that he's becoming harder to empathise with. Part of it is that his character just has too many skills, so when and where attention is focused seems scattered and illogical. Many many times in this book he points this out himself, or decides on a direction, and then seems to forget about it a chapter or 2 later. He originally started as a logical and detail orientated person who occassionally had his emotions and current events get the better of him, but has become someone who just wings everything based on what's directly in front of him. It's harder to connect with, I assume because it seems like he's making bad decisions, he should be smarter than this. And everything working out in the end doesn't really negate that.

I hope that the next book gives him a chance to rejoin with old party members, time to sit down and consolidate his skills, get back to a point where he's on top of a few things. But right now it feels like he's not on top of anything and making suboptimal choices and it's low key frustrating throughout the whole book.

I'm still intending to give the next book a chance in the hopes that it improves, but this one was definitely not what I'm looking for in this kind of series.

meh

The voices didn't do it for me, the story was not up to the usual standard. Over all quality below usual standard. I kept zoning out through out the book, tried rewinding but same thing kept happening. I made it through to the end and felt like I still didn't know what happened. I'll get the next one because the previous books are great, but if it's as bad as this one, I'll be quiting the completionist chronicles.

no complaints

The humor and writing made this a great book. The narration was as good as one can hope with a society of dwarves but the best thing the narrator did was the bloopers.
