About this listen

New town, new school. Same story. I'm Laura, I've spent most of my life crisscrossing the county yielding to the whims of my transient mother. We've never stayed in one place long enough to call it home, and I don't have any hope of that changing.

I follow the rules; no drawing attention to myself, no friends, and especially, no boys.

But my mom's been keeping secrets - secrets so profound they threaten to turn my world upside down. I've always assumed her paranoia was a symptom of a mental illness, but as her secrets begin to unravel, I realize nothing is what it seems.

As my life careens out of control, a group of guys from school promise to give me answers about who I really am. I'm afraid of what I might learn, but more afraid of what I could be giving up if I don't listen.

Contains mature themes.

This book has brilliant world and character building. The story is in-depth and brings a feeling your in story with the characters.

Love this book series

this story has great potential if it wasn't for the over explanation of every little thing and the pointless detailing of insignificant things...I really didn't need to know the exact detail and layout of a kitchen....
it takes so long to get to a point that it becomes frustrating to continue listening to and I found myself skipping ahead to still find myself waiting for the point to be made...

repetitive over detailed

Great read

I really like the story line and I kept listening because I wanted to know what happened.
I hate how drawn out it is with the main character finding out what is going on with everything it takes till chapter 18 for it to start getting anywhere. I will be buying the second book to find out what happens. She's so clueless hopefully it gets better

Good story line but...

Slow burn is an understatement for this series. After getting to the end I would say that 80% is the internal musing of the main character and 25% is actual plot... There is 5% overlap where her musings lead plot development. The fact that we get such an in-depth look into the character is great, but it highlights how idiodic and illogical some of her actions are. If Walker wasn't so good at writing character interactions this series really wouldn't be worth the effort.

BUT!!

I enjoyed it. A thoughtful, takes no shit, female character that is also quite and a little shy is something this genre (well every genre) needs more of. She is not stompting around starting fights but she certainly doesn't back down when confronted.
As someone who went though highschool being highly introverted, slightly dyslexic, and mildly on the spectrum I can relate to so much of what she goes though. "Why wont you look at me?", "Oh she does speak", "What are you stupid?" are all things I had said to me regularly throughout my school years. I was a little worried this would be a teen drama with how young she is, but it is dark and mature enough to keep me hooked and wanting more.
Her constant jealousy was a little irritating, but the fact that she was able to push it back and never lash out because of it made it more than bearable.
The guys are a little cliche - the sophisticated older guy, the brooding artist, the strong silent type, and the cute playful guy who makes everyone laugh - but at the same time I feel like it works really well. They're not over done and I can see how they can help develop the main character going forward.

I would not recommend to someone looking for an action packed romance but would recommend to anyone interested in a slow burn with constant miss-understandings.

Not your typical PR female lead

it was okay. at the end of the book, you kind or realise that the story hasn't really gone anywhere. It's definitely more for teens

okay

This book is a slow burn. It’s simply the start of the series with so much left undone and unsaid. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series, hopefully it moves in a little quicker.

Enjoyable
