About this listen

The inspiration for the major new BBC drama series Dublin Murders.

When he was 12 years old, Adam Ryan went playing in the woods one day with his two best friends. He never saw them again. Their bodies were never found, and Adam himself was discovered with his back pressed against an oak tree and his shoes filled with blood. He had no memory of what had happened.

Twenty years on, Rob Ryan - the child who came back - is a detective in the Dublin police force. He's changed his name. No one knows about his past. Then a little girl's body is found at the site of the old tragedy and Rob is drawn back into the mystery. Knowing that he would be thrown off the case if his past were revealed, Rob takes a fateful decision to keep quiet but hope that he might also solve the twenty-year-old mystery of the woods.

Descriptions of mood are created by long observational dialogues of the setting, not short and brutally delivered as modern American writing.

Very enjoyable 🥰

An intriguing story that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Very good characterization you really get real insight into each character.
The performance is good, however very English.
As the first book in the series I will continue reading.

This narration was dreadful to listen to.
Finished weakly. Forced myself to get to the end.

Tedious tale

Tana French writes a rollicking good tale but I think the narrators voice wasn’t a good fit for the main character. I would have returned the book if I could have, I found it that distracting.

Sorry John...

Story is great, well written and gripping. Narrator sounds like he has a cold and keeps making awful swallowing sounds throughout.

Story Is Great, Narrator Is Painful

Flat narration took me out of the story. I found it hard to follow and gets into the story as the narration was so flat and monotonous. It could’ve been good story but I just couldn’t enjoy it.

Half way through. Heartened that other readers thought the narrator was disappointing. Seemed like he should be the English sounding voice over for a 1950s cinema newsreel-from wrong generation for this novel. Hard to develop empathy for him. And after 120 enjoyable audiobooks on audible I was surprised. This author was recommended for readers who enjoy Louise Penny, Elly Griffiths and Sujata Massey novels. Will be interested to hear a different narrator in book 2. Still persisting…

Hope story is worth it!
