Story
I was so excited when Darcy announced out of the blue that we were flying to Kenya for our extended honeymoon. Now that we are here, I suspect he has actually been sent to fulfill another secret mission. I am trying very hard not to pick a fight about it, because after all, we are in paradise! Darcy finally confides that there have been robberies in London and Paris. It seems the thief was a member of the aristocracy and may have fled to Kenya. Since we are staying in the Happy Valley, we are well positioned to hunt for clues and ferret out possible suspects.

Publisher's Summary
Irish immigrant Molly Murphy and her New York City P.I. business are in the midst of a sweeping influenza epidemic and a fight for women’s suffrage that lands her in jail. Her betrothed, Police Captain Daniel Sullivan, finds her, but he hardly has time to bail her out, what with Chinese gangs battling for control of a thriving opium trade. The only consolation Molly can take from her vexing afternoon in the clink is that it made her some new friends among the Vassar suffragists - and brought her a pair of new cases.
For the first, Emily Boswell is convinced her miserly uncle stole her inheritance and wants Molly to uncover the truth behind her parents’ lives and deaths. Second, Emily’s college roommate, Fanny Poindexter, wants Molly to find proof of her husband’s philandering so that she can leave him without one red cent. But when Fanny dies and her husband claims she’s a victim of the epidemic, it’s more than Molly’s conscience can take.
Rhys Bowen’s Agatha and Anthony Award-winning historical series continues to breathe life into the past with its wit and charm and its complete sense of early-20th-century New York, which makes In a Gilded Cage her most accomplished mystery yet.

Excellent story / Narration a bit uneven
This is such a good series. Rhys Bowen has a clever way with creating very memorable characters (in this and her other two series). The premise behind this one is interesting. Molly Murphy begins the series as a scared Irish immigrant, literally "just off the boat," and develops into the confident and hard-working young woman we meet by the time we encounter her in this book.
Here she starts by marching with a suffragette's movement and winds up with the other women in jail for their efforts. But this opens connections with the characters who will people this story with her, as she takes on new cases through her private detection agency. Molly is a woman a bit ahead of her time, but her modern ideas do not put off the attentions of her friend, Captain Daniel Sullivan.
You can predictably count on a good read from Rhys Bowen. However, this is the first I have listened to. In the beginning, when Nicola Barber began reading in Molly's voice, I thought they had miraculously found the perfect narrator! However, I'd have to say that I found that the case not so much with the other voices. I loved every word she spoke for Molly, but found the rest to be less engaging, for some reason. Nevertheless, this is an excellent light mystery, and a good read/listen!

Enjoyable series
I really enjoy this series and have become an addict of it. The performance is generally excellent, my only complaint is that most of the men’s voices sound the same. But that is hardly ever a problem with the story. Definitely would recommend for if you enjoy light hearted mysteries. I love the historical setting and mixing in some history in with the stories. I

I love this series!
It's a wonderful series - I highly recommend it. This book was really enjoyable. I didn't see the end coming and I love that about this author. She keeps you in suspense until the end. Plus Molly came over from Ireland around the same time my grandparents came over which makes this series extra enjoyable for me. Nicola Barber's performance is fantastic as always.

Vassar Suffragist Cases
Molly attends an event with her neighbors Sid and Gus with their women’s suffragist friends. During the event, the women get arrested and Daniel has to bail them out. Following the event, Molly gets some new cases from some of the women, the first one is from a woman who wants to know more about her parents that died as missionaries in China a few days after her birth.
If you’ve gotten this far in the series, you already know what to expect from Molly. She is a good detective who often stumbles in to life threatening situations because she is so determined to solve a case and to help people. Daniel is his typical self, pleading with her to stop working as a private investigator and do take up a job more suited for women. Some people complain about Daniel but I like him, he’s predictable in his desire for Molly to quit her job but he loves her and never forces her to actually quit. I do agree that their chemistry from the first book is lacking in subsequent books, but I still like them together. I think that part of the problem is that they don’t actually spend a lot of time together.
The narration is pretty good, especially the female voices, but her male voices are often very similar. I can’t tell you how many times throughout the series I have thought Daniel was speaking only to find out that it was someone else. But it’s not enough of a bother to deter from the story.
This was not one of my favorite books of the series but it was certainly still an enjoyable read and I will definitely continue to the next book.

Great Book in Series
Would you listen to In a Gilded Cage again? Why?
I would not, just because I am not one to re-listen to books.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
It did. I love that Rhys Bowen's books aren't terribly predictable as many mystery series are.
What does Nicola Barber bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Her accents bring the book to life.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes
