About this listen

Someone's getting married. Someone's getting murdered.

In a dark, dark wood

Nora hasn't seen Clare for ten years. Not since Nora walked out of school one day and never went back.

There was a dark, dark house

Until, out of the blue, an invitation to Clare’s hen do arrives. Is this a chance for Nora to finally put her past behind her?

And in the dark, dark house there was a dark, dark room

But something goes wrong. Very wrong.

And in the dark, dark room....

Some things can’t stay secret for ever.

Critic Reviews

A slickly plotted, whip smart thriller - genuinely chilling and totally compulsive
[A] chilling psychological thriller...a tense, claustrophobic marriage of secrets, tequila shots and shotguns
If the premise might be the sort that Agatha Christie would have toyed with had she been a 21st-century graduate, Ware’s analysis of the power-games some women revel in – and the toxicity in the undertow of some female friendships – is more reminiscent of Sophie Hannah, Christobel Kent, or even Gillian Flynn and Harriet Lane (Patricia Nicol)
You won’t be able to put down this creepy page-turner
Thrilling, gripping & well-written
Toxic friendships, an isolated house, a dark snowy wood... Everyone's worst nightmare, and the perfect ingredients for this tense, terrifying novel (Clare Mackintosh, author of I Let You Go)
This is one of the hottest crime debuts around, one that does for friendship what Gone Girl did for marriage
So gripping. So glad my hen do days are behind me. It’s going to be huge (Tamar Cohen, author of Dying for Christmas and The Broken)
Ruth Ware has written an exciting, and in fact amazing book that never stops circling around behind the reader and clapping its cold hands over her eyes (Peter Straub, NYT bestselling author of Ghost Story and A Dark Matter)
I raced through this, totally unable to put it down. It’s gripping from start to finish: slick plotting, sharp twists and a pitch-perfect understanding of the many unique ways in which female friends hurt one another. Dark, smart and compulsive (Nicci Cloke, author of Lay Me Down)

Really great book, there were quite a few moments where I thought I knew what the plot twist was going to be but I was happy that it wasn't that obvious. I loved Imogens narration, the only thing that brought me out of the story was that towards the end the main characters inner dialogue started to sound the same as another characters voice.

Great and unpredictable

Narrator did an excellent job, usually struggle with accents in audio books, but Imogen was great. Storyline was great and moved fast

Easy listening

Enjoyed this story, it’s well told and the narrator is great. Devoured it over two days. Only problem for me was that every single twist and turn was predictable. It won’t leave you guessing whodunnit, how and why... but it’s an entertaining ride.

Good story but predictable twists

This one was a good read but was very predictable. I had guessed the twist near the beginning.

Interesting

It reaaaalllllyy drags towards the mid/end. You could skip a chapter or two and miss absolutely nothing new. That said, the performance was great, each character had their own voice.

The 20's chapters could be seriously condensed
