This might be an issue with the entire "extreme horror" genre, but literally everything is laid out in the first few chapters where the reader knows exactly how this is going to end, because it started with the most horrifying part. No build up to the horrifying part, it just happens. And once it happens, we aren't left going "ooh, will they get away with it?" or "ooh, will these people in danger too?" because we already know how it's going to end. Now we just sit through a couple of hours of incredibly descriptive gore. That's cool. I just prefer tension with my gore.
